I'm proud to present real-time-subdivision today as open source software.
It's a JOGL JSR-231 webstart program.

downloadable here

hope you find this useful and have fun,
best codeZ for all !

Wow I'm surprised this hasn't gotten any responses yet!

Seems pretty good to me. Like you said, small object subdivide very very fast, larger ones just gotta wait a second. All seem perfect quality though. Also the 3D performance itself isn't that bad. Maximizing the window so I'm at almost 1280 by 1024 (minus the top, bottom, and left bars, which probably hinder performance more than anything by mixing in gui elements) I can get 60 fps with about 150,000 polygons on screen. After that it starts dropping (I got 30 fps at 300,000). Wireframes are about 1/3rd to 1/2 the speed (pretty normal).

Good 3D tech demo, fun and easy to use too.
