I want to make an overlay to show me stuff while im in games.  Kinda like how xfire does it, how would i do this?

If you mean a HUD, the hud in a 2D game is generally drawn to the screen as the last art drawn per frame.

Ina 3D game it is usually txtured to one or more polys held ata  fixed distance from and parallel to the view plane

This isn't for my game, i want to make an overlay that will popup over other games like Counter Strike, Battlefield, etc.

Thats going to be a platform specific project and best done in a language that is more suited to platform specific OS hacking like C

Sorry but thats the reality of trying to hack a display owned by another game.  That game has requested full control of the display from the OS and, basically, you are trying to hack your way around that.

I would imagine most utilities that do this do so by actrually creating fake re-dircting D3D or OGL drivers that pass msot of the operations through but do their own rendering before a screen update.  Either that or hack directly intoi the OS.   But again this sort of hacking in either case is system coding and requires C.

Anyway that would be my first line of attack.
