The site for LWJGL shows it's currently in alpha. Are there any tutorials on it, or is it very premature for that?

Still too premature for that... however, what is it you need tutorials for exactly? Because, once you get the display set up it's just a matter of using OpenGL for graphics and OpenAL for sound. In which case there are plenty of tutorials out there.
