Anything related to Chirikjian?
Well, his algorithm is all about walking units over the surface of the whole to recombine. Its a great algorithm becuase its so generic, but my direction is all about internal recombination. I beleive that is a much more effecient way of doing things and scales better. My vision of metamorphic robots is huge configurations that actually use tools internally to acheive things, thus the surface of the robot is special case and everything needs to be geared towards internal reconfiguration. Its a different approach. I would bite my arm off to get the impact Chirikjian's "Kinimatics..." paper got though. I need not worry too much about this yet. I do not start the PhD until next year.
