Hello, this is my first post, i hope everyone is ok!

I have just completed making an random map generator, and have recently taken the notion to develp my java skills further by
taking on a new task of a simple tile based game. I have been browsing for a few weeks and there are lots of posts and articles on this topic eg devnet, but very little on java specifically. I have downloaded source code for various retro game remakes, like "rebelstar" and "laser squad". Ive been looking through code and can recognise bits and pieces. ive also looked at tile games such as chess.
Basically, does anyone know of a good piece of writing i could look at, that is basically describes the whole process from start to finish, of making a simple set of tiles?
My random map generator that i mentioned before, was created using my poorly designed tile system that used nested loops + arrays to create the various sizes of maps, using jtextareas as tiles, and giving them different colors, based on values, to represent the terrain type. I am not sure if this would be usable on a tiny turn-based tile-based game. if anyone has a good source of information, or can recommend a good book (or even topics to look at in sun website) please let me know!

thankyou for your time

Using textareas as tiles is not a good way to make tiled games. Perhaps you need to learn more about making games in java before you do a tile based game, there are a few tutorials i have found helpfull on the internet for that:

http://www.javacooperation.gmxhome.de/TutorialStartEng.html - first game i made
http://www.planetalia.com/cursos/index.jsp - kinda second game i made

also i have found some other language tutorials to be quite helpfull if you need to get a feel for the concepts

hi and thankyou for your reply.

i am going to have a look at the webpages you gave me , and see if i can find anything usefull. When i said "tile-based" games, i didnt however mean scrolling type games - My intention for a mini-game is based on retro spectrum tile-based games, of which there are plenty of remakes, just no good sources of information. An example game is found @ http://retrospec.sgn.net/users/matts/assault/index.htm . This is what i mean - a turn-based/tile-based games.

The most useful article i found is at http://www.tonypa.pri.ee/tbw/start.html , but this is for flash. I shall carry on through what you have suggested to me >.<

thankyou.
