Keep it up, SG.  Just keep it up.

I sincerely hope you aren't setting us up for a big fall.  Some of us are really hoping for good news.

Speaking for myself, I'm working very hard to build a good foundation for gaming in Java.  Between my MMORPG and my gaming library for 2D RPG/Strategy games (shameless plug, I know) any assistance and support that Sun can give us for this oft-ignored aspect of Java is most appreciated.

So, SG, this better be good.   Tongue

Just wanted to say that my tone was playful; it might not have been evident from my note.   Grin

In all seriousness, I do wish to thank you for whatever efforts you have been putting in at Sun to make whatever this announcement may be.  I think, as some others on here do as well, that Java really has great potential to be a gaming language.  Indeed, personally, I have chosen not to program in other languages because of its power, flexibility and capability.  Even allowing for its faults.

Saw another post on here regarding the upcoming 1.5 release of Java, and I must say, I CANNOT wait.  The new autoboxing and the for loop conveniences are my favorites.  Generics are very good too, but I count those under "must haves" rather than nice conveniences.  If that kind of power is coming in 1.5, I can only guess what you guys are planning for gaming.

Yes me too  Smiley
It seems that there are actually a good number of very useful language features added rather than just a bunch of new api's.

The new Java 1.5 (tiger) features will really help make Java even more attractive for easier development ( read cleaner and less buggy) along with all the VM/GC options.

The only thing now needing work is the media APIs (for the non-LWJGL peeps ;-)) Can't wait for June!

Totally agree. Recently realized during a prototype presentation of my Java3D project that it would be really nice to add a coastal outdoors environment with water to it. Hope JavaOne brings some good news on Java3D 1.4 with those nice, watery, programmable shaders.  Grin
