1  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: WIP: Yore Quest on: 2009-12-30 15:27:54
Hello,
I've tested this game on my htc hero phone. It worked fine. In general the game looks nice and polished, but there are few things I do not like:
-it is turn based so exploring the dungeon is a bit annoying(you do a few steps, end turn, do a few steps end turn etc).I would prefer to be able to walk without any limitations(of action points) until I find an enemy and only then play in turn based mode Wink.
-it would be nice if you could select entire party and move the group instead of moving just one unit at time.
Btw you could also edit the fist post and always put there the most recent version of the game(i took the game from there first time, installed it and then It turned out its an old version...).

Bye

Wow, I thought I would never access this forum again! Anyway It was banned for MONTHS. I tried to discuss this issue with one of the admins but he didn't bother to reply(and I didn't think that entire country was banned!).
As a user affected by this situation I must say I'm disappointed by this anti-spam policy. I  mean come on? there must be a better way..

LWJGL applets?, I didn't realise LWJGL had it's own browser plugin with all the functionality of applets. I thought they used applets by fast loading some java classes using standard applet behaviour, then go on to download and unpack the natives/resources etc.

Endolf

Obviously LWJGL doesn't have any own brwoser plugins, it just a custom downloader/loader Wink

didn't know a (official) linux runtime was available yet?
It dones't need any extra runtime, its using jre. There is no SDK for linux though.

I dont want to bash against JavaFX but unfortunatly I cannot see any good looking demo yet, could you point out us some nice one ?
Well, all the demos on the javafx website are... lets say not impressive. While some of the flex demos show good looking animated online stores javafx shows an UFO flying around the desktop Wink, and that flying UFO didn't work on my linux.
6  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2009 / Re: Judging Results on: 2009-04-02 18:56:25
I think changing the results was a bad move. Good or bad, fair or not, once published they should be final. Its kinda unfair to tell people they took 2th or 3rd place and take it back.
I also don't like the idea of removing the highest and lowest judge score, it doesn't make sense to me(even though one of the judges gave my game probably the lowest postive score of the entire contest while all others were much more open-handed Tongue). Except for the 0% issues i think the current judging system is fine. The community voting has one big problem: the best games get all the comments and reviews, and most of the other games gets nothing.
7  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2009 / Re: Judging Results on: 2009-04-01 21:27:29
Well, about the zero scored games, what other score could I possibly give them?  Obviously there were issues with launching these since all of the other games launched. I hated to score these three this way, but there was no alternative.  And I am not the only judge who had issues.

Of course for some of the judges some games did not work so they gave it 0% and thats fine, but I think that overall score of the game shoudl not be affected by it Wink.
Its rather a suggestion for a further contests, because i think once the results are officialy published they should not be touched(unless someone cheated or something like that).
8  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2009 / Re: Judging Results on: 2009-04-01 20:45:26
I think that there should be a better way of scoring the game that did not work for one of the judges than giving it 0%. Arithmetic mean of other three reviews would be better i think.
9  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / Re: Holy shit! They made the flash version of DOOM!! on: 2009-03-31 22:54:19
yeah I noticed that it take 37 ~ 50% of my cpu all the time,
(E8400 2 X 3.0ghz)
 I wonder if they can make port Quake code
into flash and maintain the playable frame rate.
Who knows but it would be probably more cpu demanding than the most recent fps games, and that doesn't make to much sense to me Tongue.

Btw i don't know what is so cool about quake live. It needs its own browser plugin doesn't it?

13  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2009 / Re: Next 4K contest should be Applet only? on: 2009-03-25 15:10:35
I think its a good idea in theory, but in practice we all know that applets sux and webstat is a failed attempt to replace them Wink(honelsty i haven't seen any webstat on any website not related to java developent). I really can't understand why is so difficult to improve loading experience and stop random browser crashes. That is the real issue, not the jre download size and sun doesn't seem to understand it, but that is a bit off topic.  I'm fine with the applets only contest, the games could be embeded in java4k.com site and thats a good idea (as long as they don't crash the browser of course).

Also, C# basically is Java, so you would probably spend about 2 days learning it.

You can learn the syntax even in two hours, but its not about the syntax, its about the api and frameworks. You won't learn these in two days.

There are only handful singificant java games for pc. You should probably learn j2me and android, but to be honest probably about 90% of java programmers does boring enterprise applications so this seems to be only realistic career choice for  a java developer Wink.
16  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2009 / Re: Dragon 4k Boxing on: 2009-03-11 21:51:03
Awesome title screen; it’s the best title screen I’ve seen.  Interesting that you hid the window borders.  I can’t believe that the game includes a training period.  Those strings must have used up a lot of space.  If you chose better colors, I think the sprites could have been much improved.  After training, I’m still no good at this.  In a fighting game, I really don’t want to learn so much.  How about an attack button that randomly punches and kicks and a block button, plus jump and move left/right?  Also, slow it down so that I can actually kill the enemy.
Hello,
Thanks for your comment. All the strings use a lot of space but I realized that this game is too difficulit and needs a tutorial Smiley. I use same paletes original game does, I'm not much of artist so I don't think i could do any better Wink.
Actually original game has two control modes: "standard" and "master". Standard mode is similar to what you propose: forward is a block, and there are two attack buttons: punch and kick. I decided to implement master mode because i thought standard would be too trivial - i guess only for me hehe. The first enemy is supposed to be easy to beat but now its rather too late for making improvments since the contest is closed Wink.

Am I the only one who uses NetBeans?  Does professional coders laugh at NB users always when they open eclipse?  Huh I once installed eclipse about two years ago but I think something happened and it didn't start or something.. Anyway I have different computer, OS etc so I guess I'll give it another try. I think I won't abandon NetBeans because there is some nice plugins that help me a lot. However I'll download eclipse now.

About that Xcode thing.. It sounds very Apple! I downloaded Safari once and there was some autocomplete things that actually slowed me down.
Netbeans is very good ide and has been imporoved dramaticly over past few years.  It has a keyboard shortcut for System.out.println Wink, just type sout[tab]. For more shortcuts check Help->Keyboard Shortcuts(or something like that).

Althoguh I'm not impressed by the gameplay, I must say this is the best looking 4k game I've seen so far. Great job.

I really like the idea and the graphics. I always liked the motif window decoration Wink. Just wondering, do you write the actual components with the motif look and feel on the screen?
20  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: Droid Assault Linux FAIL on: 2009-01-21 23:53:13
Personally i think these dialogs should look alerting, because they actually ask for  full access to local resources.
21  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: Droid Assault Linux FAIL on: 2009-01-21 17:10:41
I think thats the way it always used to be. It doesn't mean application won't run. It only means that sun did not verify this certificate/publisher. As far as i know that's the way signed applets always used to work. The only difference between verified certificate and unverified is that, the information in the run dialog.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyway, although i get the same message the game works fine on my linux box after i press the run button.
22  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2009 / Re: Dragon 4k Boxing on: 2009-01-19 12:59:20
UPDATE!

Game starts with a tutorial now! Similar to one that original game has. Also enemies now look different than the player Wink.
I wanted to improve the gameplay but i ran out of space, so ths is probably the one an only update...

Thank you! The problem is solved now.
24  Java Game APIs & Engines / Java 2D / IndexColorModel on: 2009-01-18 14:01:18
Hello,
I have a gif image that i load with ImageIO. It has 3 colors + transparent background(saved with gimp, indexed mode, 3 colors). I want to be able to use several different paletes for this image, infact i want to create another bufferedimage, with new palete and draw the old one on it.
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
int[] cmap = { 0xff2e00a4, 0xff2401d6, 0xff6c4eee, 0x00000000};
IndexColorModel icm = new IndexColorModel(8, cmap.length, cmap, 0,true,3,DataBuffer.TYPE_BYTE);

BufferedImage image = new BufferedImage(20,25,BufferedImage.TYPE_BYTE_INDEXED,icm);
Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D)image.getGraphics();
g2d.setComposite(AlphaComposite.getInstance(AlphaComposite.CLEAR, 0.0f));
g2d.fillRect(0, 0, 20, 25);

The problem is that when i draw the original image on it, only one color is visible, ant the two others seem to be transparent.

The code:
1
2
3
IndexColorModel cm = (IndexColorModel)originalImage.getColorModel();
System.out.println(cm.getMapSize());
System.out.println(cm.getTransparentPixel());

Prints 4,3.
Any ideas?

This game uses compressed textures to display the text. Which graphics card do you use? My graphics card supports GL_ARB_texture_compression.
I use ancient geforce 2 gts Wink

This is my game, its a 4k remake of nes/snes/arcade classic (well, not really a classic but i loved it Wink) fighting game with unique controlls.
It may be a bit tricky in the begining, anyway here is how it works.
There is a mark that shows up on characters It may show up on upper, middle or low point. If it shows on a player, he must block, if its on the enemy its time to strike Wink.
ESC - quit
UP - upper block
LEFT/RIGHT - middle block or move left/right
DOWN - low block
UP + Z - high kick
LEFT/RIGHT + Z - middle kick
DOWN + Z - low kick
UP + X - high punch
LEFT/RIGHT + X - middle punch

Comments are welcome.

28  Java Game APIs & Engines / OpenGL Development / Re: modifying textures on: 2008-12-27 18:23:41
What's your target hardware?
Well, i would like my application to run even on very old graphics cards, since its not very hardware demanding 2d game Wink.
29  Java Game APIs & Engines / OpenGL Development / modifying textures on: 2008-12-27 14:13:57
Hello,
I would like to temporary change the way that texture is displayed. I want to remove the colors, so it will look like a grayscale, and i want to darken or brighten it at times. How can i do this? I could probably manipulate a buffered image and bind another texture but there is probably a better solution.

thanks
30  Game Development / Performance Tuning / Re: opengl 2D performance on: 2008-09-14 22:08:30
Acutally now i don't clear neither color buffer nor the depth buffer. Maybe my graphics card is broken or something but clearing any of these buffers slows everything by 20-30 fps.
