Patents have definitely gotten out of control. I did a lot of patent research about 5 years ago, and actually sent a Preliminary Patent Application for a software solution I developed. The problem is that to get a full patent, you have to have extraordinary research of prior art, and airtight legal wording, and that costs big $$$. So a patent has really become out of reach for the average person, and even if you got it, protecting it can be just as bad. A big company like Microsoft can easily tie up a smaller company in courts and make the cost of protecting a patent more than it's worth. And then they have the ability to get these 'crap' patents.  I think the patent laws need a major overhauling.

Thanks for the feedback oNyx. Some of the guys on the GTGE forum also thought it was a little difficult at the start, so I have changed the first few levels to 4 colors to make it easier to find matches. I also changed some probabilities for the special tiles to make 'good' things happen more often at first.

The theme is also a tad too dark (imo anyways).
The scoreboard area closely imitates a blues concert poster I found on the net. As far as the background behind the tiles, I actually tried some lighter colors, and they just didn't work as well. I made the tile images before I had the Blues theme, so it just got stuck that way. I would like to eventually change the tile images and background to match the Blues theme a little better. Maybe when (if?) I get around to that, I'll experiment with some lighter/brighter colors.

The main issue starting with the game engine is that you might never finish the game because you will keep on adding new features and restructuring your code/design as you learn more about the art of game writing. Of course this might not be bad, unless you actually intend to finish a game...
If you really want to finish a game, it might help to use an existing game engine. I use GTGE (, which is particularly good for platform games. I'm sure there are other good 2D game engines as well. So if you are more interested in the actual game creation more than working on the engine, this might be the way to go.
