I have done what you ask but I will have to look at my code and see if there is anything useful there. will try to post something later
2  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: How did you start? on: 2006-08-01 12:22:16
I started with no real programming knowledge and absolutely no java knowledge . I decided that I wanted to do something in 3D and started trolling around on the net. discovered the nehe tutorials and then realised that openGL was the thing that would inspire me. Made a random language selection and chose Java, so hunted for java 3D tutorials. Found www.cokeandcode.com and went through all the tutorials there. I realised that the best tutorials and help I could find were all using LWJGL . Since then I`ve been sat in the LWJGL IRC chatroom almost nonstop and have learnt tons of stuff (most of which is more about the weirdo`s in there than the language Wink  <joke> ).

From there I realised that it should be "possible" for me to make a 3D OpenGL game by myself so started looking for a game idea that wouldn`t be too difficult but would give me a little feeling of achievement (pong would not make me feel at all good with myself). The result of about a months work was my first game "Spacman". I am still a noob but am now having fun with finishing off my second game. Every step of the way I have learnt new stuff and am now at the point where I think I need to take a new direction to keep myself inspired. Am still looking for the new direction Smiley

you can look at my futile attempts at www.newdawnsoftware.com/~thesmit
(oh yes, it`s like God himself gave me a leg up, thanks Kev).

I would love to help you out as I have made a tilemapped pacman game myself but maybe my brain is a little slow at the moment. I would suggest that you read Kevs tutorial at http://www.cokeandcode.com/collisiontilemaps and see if that helps you out . That tutorial was the basis of all movement and collision detection in my game.

9  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Please try my game - spac-man on: 2006-06-14 10:47:26
thanks for the report BlueSky.

I have decided to stop making improvements to this game as there no longer seems any interest in it. I have incorporated better loading into my next game

why not webstart it ? Tongue
12  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: What should i start with? on: 2006-06-02 12:07:26
I started out the same way as you. I found that the tutorials at www.cokeandcode.com were perfect for my needs and that the tutorials at nehe.gamedev.net were ideal for showing me the basics Smiley

BTW: using Java and something like LWJGL, its just as simple to jump straight into 3D . I managed to make a 3D pac-man type game quite easily just using those 2 sets of tutorials and lots of help from the lovely people on irc://irc.freenode.net/lwjgl

good luck

Hey all,

I am Going over to New York in a few weeks time and wondered if any of our American friends on here might be able to give me an idea of the best price I can get a PSP either in a store in NY or from Duty Free

thanks Smiley
14  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Tiltilation on: 2006-05-23 20:24:53
It really is one of those learning curve things. I started off trying to zip around and had no luck at all. Next I tried going really slowly and carefully . This worked a charm for me but there was no way I was going to get any stars. After 15-20 levels of crawling around levels, I came across one that you literally HAD to try to burn your way through. Next thing I know, I`m actually quite average at all the levels

thanks Kev

changed the hosting of the files , should work now Smiley
18  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Ice Maze on: 2006-05-22 15:24:48
seems to me that there is a problem with the files being downloaded. I`m going to guess that your error Matzon was due to the resources jar not coming down.
I get the "read 0" thing as well myself but the files still seem to download.

looks like I`ll have to switch hosts again Sad
19  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Ice Maze on: 2006-05-22 13:05:01
thats really weird . it downloads for me fine . but you are the 3rd person to tell me the same thing . Any ideas why that might be ?
20  Games Center / Archived Projects / Ice Maze on: 2006-05-22 12:36:48
A new game from me. provisionally called Ice maze .

http://www.java.itsmyland.com

please give this game a little try, there are a million graphical and gameplay place-holders, and the theme music has a very annoying place-holder sound(kill it in options if you want)  but the game should be at least playable. The biggest problem seems to be that some people cannot download the game from my new host . please leave feedback.

the idea is to run around (arrows) , push the blocks around (with spacebar), kill the baddies by crushing them with moving blocks and to complete the level, place the 4 special blocks in their correct positions (marked on the floor).
21  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Please try my game - spac-man on: 2006-05-20 19:57:20
the game loads in all the resources before updating the screen . so it may take quite some time before you get anything actually displayed .

My newest game doesnt have that problem as it uses deferred loading Smiley

take a peek at a very early version here http://www.java.itsmyland.com/
22  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Please try my game - spac-man on: 2006-05-18 15:11:59
no longer improving spac-man unless anyone has any major suggestions , it`ll just sit there on www.javagamesfactory.org gathering dust.

thanks for all your help and ideas . .... now on to the next game Smiley

now if only the AI was smart enough to run away when you have the powerup
well, that would be the next logical step Smiley

I will look into that soon . I`m sure it will quite simple to implement now I have everything else sorted Smiley
25  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: Enemy movement on a maze (like pacman) on: 2006-05-05 15:27:31
I have just implemented the ghost AI on my pac-man game and this is what I did .

test the position of the ghost with the position of the player.

if ghost is not moving . pick one of the 2 directions that will take it towards the player.

if ghost is moving but it has not moved the distance of one tile square, keep moving

if the ghost has moved the distance of 1 tile square, check the 2 possible directions the player may be, if not blocked, choose one, if blocked, continue the way it was already going.

I found that this worked very well, especially when i added a little check that if a ghost got stuck unable to move towards the player, it would keep picking a random direction until it got moving again.

hope that helps

26  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Please try my game - spac-man on: 2006-05-01 21:06:11
have just uploaded a new version with sweet AI on the ghosts .

have capped framerate at 60fps

looking into crash problems next .... i think it was mainly due to the insane framerates some people were getting
27  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Please try my game - spac-man on: 2006-04-30 16:06:55
thanks for that woogley . you are right that the ghosts dont actually chase you . they just roam around aimlessly.
next step is due to be the ghost AI

another user had the same crash problem during the second cut-scene but hard to debug as i have tried to get the error again by playing that scene about 100 times. I will continue to look into it
28  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Please try my game - spac-man on: 2006-04-30 12:28:21
quite a few changes to the game . please try to complete at least the first level (its quite simple) and leave feedback.

thanks Smiley
29  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Please try my game - spac-man on: 2006-04-23 23:59:37
Have added theme music and an options screen where you can change the volume of music and sound effects.

30  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Please try my game - spac-man on: 2006-04-21 18:07:09
i have taken notice of  some remarks given and have added the following.

cut-scenes ( 3 at the moment )

better framerates (I hope)

better level transitions

user prompt when chaos time hits . (very bad font - looking for bitmap font donations please)
altered the look and position of all messages

changed background graphics

PLEASE give feedback on these updates , I know about most of the other problems Smiley
