1  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Swing or AWT on: 2006-03-09 23:07:59
So I'm coding an HCI project whose purpose is to serve as a public bulletin board in a main foyer of the building on a large plasma screen. This same interface will be mimiced online because we want to provide people access to it away from the plasma screen. So, we wanted to write it in Java to give it that flexibility.

The basic interface as two trays on either side of the screen that contain 'magnet' icons. The center of the display has many many many moving dots that represent flyers. So basically, we need an interface that will allow someone to drag an icon from one location to another, then reorder the displayed dots to show a relationship to the icon that was placed. Eventually you get down to a view of maybe 5-10 dots, which have tag bubbles that display a caption and other text information. Once you find the flyer you wanna look at, you 'open' the dot and a PDF or some image is displayed. All the calculations and determination of location of the dots/icons are easy. But figuring out how to display these objects isn't so intuitive.

So my questions: Swing or AWT? Or Java2D? Or what? Also, what event handler would I use (what package i.e.)? And finally, how should I display the actual flyer, either a PDF or JPEG or something. Thanks for the help. I can upload a scan of the basic user interface if I need to clarify that.
