1  Game Development / Shared Code / Re: NIO Wrapper (TCP / UDP) on: 2008-11-18 14:19:55
I am not trying to rain on your parade Riven.

Have any of you checked out: http://mina.apache.org/

On Mina's Homepage:
Quote
Apache MINA is a network application framework which helps users develop high performance and high scalability network applications easily. It provides an abstract · event-driven · asynchronous API over various transports such as TCP/IP and UDP/IP via Java NIO.

I haven't put forth the time to check it out, but it seems like a pretty nice library.

JAR:
http://www.codeclub.org/downloads/executables/othello.jar

This is just a simple game of Othello it is currently just set up for Hotseat play.  I'm currently working on the AI of the game. Other than that the controls are just point-n-click, 'ESC' exits the game, 'Enter' restarts the game.

Since you channeled all your IO through the one port have you noticed any latency difference?

I'm not sure how well it would work here @ work since we are forced to go through a proxy and cached server.

What are you using for your IO, standard java.net or NIO?  Blocking or Non-Blocking?

What type of strategy game are you aiming at TB or RTS?
5  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2005 / Re: Neb4k on: 2005-02-03 18:31:03
I swear kev you pump these 4k games out like there was nothing to it......lol.  Keep up the good work.

andr-

This game is a lot like the tank game I was developing in my free time, until having to work 2 jobs took all that..... Cry.  Granted you got a lot further than I did.  I felt it ran very smooth and I would give it an all around good score.  I really enjoyed the speed of the game, which was my main goal in my game.  I was aiming for an arcade feel, for the casual user to come and just blow stuff up.  You captured that well...good job.

I have yet to try out the online play due to working places w/ very restrictive firewalls.  The single player was fun until I was spawned right by the computer player and I couldn't get away let alone kill them....lol.

Have you profiled your server?  What's the max numbers of players set to play in a game at a time?  I would guess it's pretty small due to the size of the maps.

Overall this game has a lot of potential and if you need any help w/ development I would enjoy too.

flush()

from java.sun:

Flushes this output stream and forces any buffered output bytes to be written out. The general contract of flush is that calling it is an indication that, if any bytes previously written have been buffered by the implementation of the output stream, such bytes should immediately be written to their intended destination.

I didn't notice anyone else suggest this, but I would suggest setting a flag to enable windowed mode.

Just a thought....otherwise it looks to be coming along nicely.

The only problem i noticed was in 'robot wars'.  I noticed your Jet fuel does not regenerate while your walking or jumping.  Is this the way it's suppose to be?

After platypus's comment i'm sorry to say I'm American to, he's one of the moron's that live here, and makes it a lot harder to visit other countries w/o people hating us before we get there.
It seems to me, he must have originally started his game playing in the 3D environment.  Cause it seems that the gaming industry anymore is aiming at making things more pretty looking than worrying about the fun factor of the game.  Which once was the main aim of game development back in the hay day.  Sure there were still games I didn't enjoy playing, but that was partially do to how hard some of the games were.  Then I would give up to easy.
12  Java Game APIs & Engines / Java 3D / 3d objects? can be imported? on: 2004-08-26 16:46:13
My main question is:

Can 3D objects created by 3rd party software, be import into and used by Java3D?

If so, what 3rd party software can u do this with? or does the object have to be saved a certain way?

3ds max? swift3d? etc?

Thanks

To bbqplatypus:

Did you ever think maybe a 2D game could just be a simple stepping stone to bigger and better things?  Plus, not all 2D games suck, have you ever played 'Soldat'? It is a 2D FPS and it is pretty bad ass.  Besides just because you think the graphics suck doesn't necessaryily mean that the game concept sucks.  Some of the greatest games made are 2D and people still enjoy playing them to this day.

Thanks for the links.

I really enjoy the 'shadow piece', it would be nice though if you were able to shut it off if you like though.

I missed the option to drop a tile immediately (usually done via space or VK_DOWN). This potentially adds a lot of speed to the game.

The 'drop' control is not implemented  Smiley

Thank you for the comments/suggestions.

I have added the ability for the user to map the mouse buttons and wheel to the controls of the game. Let me know what u think of this idea?  Especially since the mouse cursor MUST be over the frame in order to capture the events. Thank you for the comments/suggestions.

I have recently been working on a good ol' tetris game. I have gotten to a point where I think it needs to be tested by a broader audience than just my roommate and I..... Smiley  So I would appreciate any feedback/comments/suggestion. Thanks a head of time.

born2snipe

Sorry about not setting it up for webstart. When ever I try to do it, it never works  Huh, but I know a JAR will  Tongue
