1  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: Moving away from Java on: 2009-04-25 23:37:00
This is one (big) reason why i probably wont be making any more java games (except maybe 4k Smiley.

About a year ago I made a puzzle game java applet (http://spacetaken.net/laz3r/). It is a pretty simple game and has little in the way of polish.

Very recently I have been learning flash, using the free flex2 sdk to write flash applets in pure actionscript 3. I converted my laz3r game into flash, added (very little) extra polish, and submitted it to kongregate as something of an experiment - http://www.kongregate.com/games/gareth0/faze.

Right now - in less than 48 hours since upping it - the flash version has had 9326 plays, which is an order of magnitude greater than the applet version has ever had, and I have got a few dollars of ad revenue to boot. Which is just great, basically.

EDIT: I guess the point is that it is far easier for me to get feedback (and people playing my games, which is good by itself) using flash.

Your site looks pretty bad without cookies enabled, like there is no style sheet.

nice concept though.
3  Discussions / Community & Volunteer Projects / Re: Community Project Mark 562 - Game Direction Vote (v2) on: 2009-01-14 22:38:08

I thought thats what I did in the RTS thread. The gritty details would be given when people show a Keen interest.

people wont show a keen interest in a vague proposal though. you need to show you have energy and commitment yourself before you can expect other people (at least those who have seen a few of these sorts of things fail Cheesy) to seriously consider joining you.

lets establish some vague guidelines (must take ~4 months, allow ~10 people to work on it), then hold a contest for convincing proposals (with details).
4  Discussions / Community & Volunteer Projects / Re: Community Project Mark 562 - Game Direction Vote (v2) on: 2009-01-14 21:26:19
i would be willing to commit a few hours a week if like the idea.

i voted RTS, but i think its all rather vague - how about anyone who has a clear idea of how this project could work writes some sort of proposal saying what type of game it is, how people will work on it together, how much effort will be needed and by whom, etc?

then we can judge things that are more concrete.

?

i played ikariam (http://www.ikariam.org/) for a while last year, and perhaps this project could produce something like that*, except with an interface so people can write bots - the work could be separated into:

- central game server, with rpc/rest/whatever (networked) api
- web or java2d-based interface to that server, for human players
- bots using the api - anyone can write their own bot/ai

i realise i am somewhat late to the party, just chucking an idea out there. Smiley

*ikariam is a real time strategy game, but actions take hours instead of minutes

i like the style/feel, reminds me of yoshis island. im confused as to what im meant to be doing though.
7  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: NEED YOUR INPUT - NEW JGO FORUMS on: 2008-07-17 20:38:06
I am under the impression that the "Show unread posts since last visit." page isn't working correctly.
I click it and it tells me "No unread topics found since your last visit."
Even if I click "Click here to try all unread topics." it tells me "No messages..."

This was the primary feature I use when coming to JGO to find the new stuff.

same problem here

up until a week or so a go I had cookies set to expire when i closed firefox, so i typed in my login every visit. "view unread posts since last visit" worked then, but since i allowed cookies to be saved this feature no longer works.

im using firefox 2.

EDIT: deleting cookies fixed it
EDIT2: seems it actually didnt, i guess il just disable cookies again Tongue

9  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: Create a space to submit and to launch Java webstartable games on: 2008-05-27 09:22:41
Thanks. I'm going to fix it. magic_quotes_gpc is at on, I expected it at false, it is discouraged to enable it in PHP 6.0.0. I will use addslashes(...) before using a string to query the database and stripslashes(...) to clean a string before displaying it. Christoph will deactivate these magic quotes if possible in php.ini.

you should probably use mysql_real_escape_string instead of addslashes, see:

http://shiflett.org/blog/2006/jan/addslashes-versus-mysql-real-escape-string

@javagametome

its not pretty atm, but that fact that you are doing it is good, and i assume it will get better if you continue to keep working on it.

i suggest you make people provide a thumbnail of a certain size when submitting a game, currently the scaling is poor quality and the aspect ratios are all broken
10  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Laz3r puzzle game on: 2008-05-27 09:12:37
Please could you provide an URL to a screenshot in order to allow me to add your game into the Java(tm) Game Tome please?

its not pretty, but tbh this isnt a nice looking game:  Smiley

11  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: What happened to java.com? on: 2008-05-27 09:07:50
well its not perfect but i think it makes it easier to download java than the old one, which is good.
12  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: NEED YOUR INPUT - NEW JGO FORUMS on: 2008-05-24 13:25:00
i like the new logo, but like others said there is a ton of wasted space with this theme, id prefer one with less scrolling required.

15  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / Re: A silly question on: 2008-05-19 18:40:30
Why on earth would you want to do that?  Shocked

heh i really dont of course, i just wondered  Smiley

I've also wondered what would happen if I changed the value of the instance variable for length in an array.

Ex.) int[] arr = new int[5];
int.length = Integer.MAX_VALUE;
int[999] = 1000;

Will I start overwriting my operating system?  Tongue

eh its final you cant change it

lwjgl applet here, works great.  more tutorial levels are quite helpful. only crit i have is i wish the music was more changeable  Smiley
17  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / A silly question on: 2008-05-17 18:42:26
what kind of exception do you get when you concatenate 2 strings where the combined length would be more than Integer.MAX_VALUE ?

erm, webstart version?  Cheesy
19  Games Center / Featured Games / Re: Putty Puzzle on: 2008-05-08 08:50:12
i think the controls are a little clunky, and it is way too hard - the tutorial should continue on for longer. I like the mechanic though.

23  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Nex Gen LWJGL Applets! on: 2008-04-23 08:12:07
very well done, really smooth and fast after the initial lag, hopefully with the new applet plugin it will be even better Smiley

There are a lot of loading steps - is it possible to cut some of those out? Here's the current user experience:
1. See a "play" button, press it.
2. See a indeterminate loading graphic for a few seconds.
3. See a "trust" dialog, press "run" or "trust"
4. See a LWJGL loading bar (looks great!)
5. See the game's loading bar.

imo the initial play button is a better user experience than having the applet load (and thus lag the browser) automatically. I got no "trust" dialogs here, i suppose i must have accepted the certificates previously.
24  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: NPE's sometimes get ignored? on: 2008-04-16 09:38:21
long shot but there could be a default exception handler that simply ignores it?
25  Games Center / Featured Games / Re: Incredibuilder! on: 2008-04-15 19:46:34
- is the game working correctly?
yep

- how do you find the game, fun or not? What do you think?
its pretty slow and boring right now, doesnt seem to be much of a challenge

- you're detailed hardware, OS version and Java version
winxp java 1.6 7600gt

- any bug you may encounter
any way to get back to the instructions? - i tryed esc but that quit it  Wink it seems you can place blocks on top of each other, is that a bug?

graphics are quite pretty Smiley

looks interesting, the controls feel very  "slippy" though
27  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2008 / Re: Results!!! on: 2008-03-29 16:46:53
Perhaps we could go a half-and-half route?  Community voting is half the score and judge voting is the other half.  That keeps things a little more fair in case someone has a crappy game but goes and gets all their friends to come in and vote for their game anyway.

i agree good idea

I completely disagree with community voting.  The best 2 games I have made in all the 4Ks so far were in last year's competition, but they weren't even looked at because most people looked at half or less of the games.  And with the list in alphabetical order mine were in the second half.  I am sure there are a lot of other people whose games were not looked at either.

The only way to make community voting fair is not to count anybody's scores unless they provide a score for each game.

i agree that is a problem, there is no reason it cant be done more fairly though - ordering randomly for example, and not showing the currently number of plays or votes for any game until the end of the contest. There could also be a buffer time between the submission deadline and the results to allow for community votes to be a bit fairer.

thanks to appel and the other judges.   Smiley

Quote from: matt hicks (darkfrog)
You lose points for not making your JNLP 1.5+ and making me have to install 1.5 in addition to 1.6.

i have to mention this is because the sound doesnt work in 1.5 - i did ask if the judges would be using 1.5 to test - http://www.java-gaming.org/forums/index.php?topic=17958.msg141481#msg141481  Undecided

the judges did do a good job (despite some of them not seeming to understand my game Cheesy) i would also like a community vote next year, to get more interest in the contest - maybe allow anyone to vote so long as they write a short comment to accompany it.
29  Game Development / Shared Code / Re: Looking for the "Smooth Applet Loader" Grall ? yet another try ... (Updated on: 2008-03-15 11:03:34
i dont want to be so negative but i dont see what this is meant to fix. the problem is imo the 1-2 seconds of  browser freeze that you get when the vm loads for the first time and you get that with this too.  Undecided
