1  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: How goes Xith3D? on: 2006-07-21 23:24:26
Hi David,

It is great to see you back! I use Xith3d in my flight simulator and I am one happy user. The lack of shades (or the existence of broken shades) somewhat bugs me. I am out of my league in Xith and can't really fix it. Will you please take a look at the shadows and see if you can make them work again. It will be just awesome if you do that. And, again, as Xith3d user, I am happy to wellcome you back !

So, I am little lost here. Is there a hope the shadows be fixed in Xith ?
3  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: Shadows ? on: 2006-07-14 19:55:14
I hope someone who knows Xith3d code can fix them. Can fixing shadows be added to the list for improvement requests? I would think shadows are quite important in any application of Xith3d.

Can someone shed some light on shadows? Are they working now and if there are any plans to fix them?

5  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: Xith 0.71 performance problem? on: 2006-06-30 17:25:43
And vipbarr, I see you're using the Swing GUI : *please* don't use it ! It slows down everything incredibly !

Instead, use the new HUD system included in 0.8 (ahem, problem here.. but tests it at least..)
vipbarr, did you notice that ?
Yes I did. I am not using it now. I used it before for FPS counter only and saw no noticable perf. degradation.
6  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: Xith 0.71 performance problem? on: 2006-06-30 01:45:09
I can't really contribute benchmarks right now, but used this forum to point to the degraded performance after moving to the new Jogl implementation.  Can someone tell what is the reason - the new Jogl API is less performant, or the code had to be reworked for the new Jogl API and that made Xith code slower or what else? For those in the midst of this, please shed some light.

Thanks
7  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: Xith 0.71 performance problem? on: 2006-06-29 20:31:48
I hope I do not offend anybody, you guys do great job and I really hope that in the next versions the porformance hit will be solved. The performance considerations must be top priority if Xith3d is to be used in games.  I for myself can't move to 0.7 or 0.8 because of that.
8  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: Xith 0.71 performance problem? on: 2006-06-29 18:23:54
The reason I did not try 0.8 is because I need to do massive changes because of TextureLoader API being discontinued  (In my view as gratefull user of Xith3d any incompatibility is bad and should not be introduced lightly)
Second, if I changed the code to 0.8 and the prformance was as bad as in 0.7 (and I expect that since the problem is with the JSR 371 port) ) I had to abandon the changes and still use the pre 0.7 version.

To me as game developer (actually my product is flight simulator) improvements are of no value if the prformance suffer. I am not smart enough to know why the code was moved to JSR 371 or why is slow now. I can't really use it anymore because of the performance hit.  I can't release a new version and tell my users that their rate whent down from 40 fps (that they deemed acceptable) to 30 fps (that they will deem choppy).
9  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: Xith 0.71 performance problem? on: 2006-06-29 04:47:52
Yes I did. Do you expect 0.8  to be more performant than 0.7 and why ?   Ver. 0.7 is the first that implements the new JSR and is based on the new Jogl. I expect 0.8 will perform the same as 0.7. I can try it as well. My question still stands, what made 0.7 slower?

10  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Xith 0.71 performance problem? on: 2006-06-28 22:09:44
I switched my RC Flight Simulator (ClearView from http://rcflightsim.com) from older version of Xith to 0.71 (with the new JOGL JSR 371)
The frame rate for a particular scene whent down from 200 fps to 155 fps. Since all other is the same, what is the reason for the big performance hit - the new Jogl or the way Xit3d uses the new Jogl.
The performance hit is acros the board and between 20-25% lower frame rate.

As new versions are released, are you guys checking if there are performance improvements or hits. It would be nice if there is some benchmark that can be used to evaluate the  performance of any new version.

Thanks. How do I get the latest version source files for Xith3d?
12  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / xith3d problem with Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family on: 2006-03-05 20:18:32
I have a problem with my game not working on computers with Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family video.

On the same computer X-Plane reports this:

   Disabling VBOs for Intel hardware.
   X-System Version 8.32 compiled on Jan 22 2006 17:16:03
   OpenGL Situation :
   OpenGL Vendor    :Intel
   OpenGL Render    :Intel 915GM
   OpenGL Version   :1.4.0 - Build 4.14.10.4497

and Xith3d reports this and fails:

   Init GL is net.java.games.jogl.impl.windows.WindowsGLImpl
   OpenGL Renderer = GDI Generic
   OpenGL Version = 1.1.0
   OpenGL Vendor = Microsoft Corporation
   OpenGL Extensions = GL_WIN_swap_hint GL_EXT_bgra GL_EXT_paletted_texture

Can someone help what is the problem?

Thanks

13  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: Problems with Transparency on: 2005-12-21 01:16:35
A small cheat (with works rather well) for trees etc. is to use alpha testing instead of blending. Then these can be happily rendered as a normal solid object and the ordering doesn't matter.

Arne, what exactly did you do so the problem disapear? Please post the code change!

Thanks

I filter for Game Pad type devices. So, how the JInput listed a printer as gamepad is somethink I would like to investigate. Can you please tell me if you run Game Pad Tester, what is the type that this printer shows on the tester?
15  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: ClearView RC Helicopter Simulator on: 2004-12-25 04:57:15
oNyx, thanks for the feedback. Used some of it for the next iteration. Regarding the cam views, the whole purpose of rc simulator is that you are outside of the helicopter and thas is what makes it so hard, because of the control reversal when heli turns against you.

This HID is the problem. Make sure you have only your game pad as HID.

Thanks for the explanation. Never needed this. Have someone ran my program?    Embarrassed

Thanks. I never said it is crossplatform. BTW, what stylesheet? :=)

As we all know, flying rc helicopter is not easy. I wrote radio controlled helicopter simulator using Java, Xith3d, Joal and JInput. Check it out at http://rcflightsim.com and let me know what do you think.  Any feedback is better than none.
20  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / rc helicopter simulator in xith3d on: 2004-12-04 03:11:16
Here is a radio controlled helicopter simulator I wrote using xith3d, joal and jinput:  http://rcflightsim.com
You will need a joystick to control the helicopters.

It looks like when I move the camera using lookat the light position and direction change (in somewhat unpredictable way)
22  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: Casting shadows in Xith3d? on: 2004-08-03 22:27:24
According to this post:
http://www.java-gaming.org/cgi-bin/JGNetForums/YaBB.cgi?board=xith3d;action=display;num=1067774416
shaddows used to work in the Ase loader test showing a tank. I ran the test today and there are no shadows casted. Are they broken?
23  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Casting shadows in Xith3d? on: 2004-08-03 21:52:20
It looks like the lighted objects do not cast any shadows.  Is this the case? If so, what is a simple way for an object to cast a shadow on a plane? Creating objects with projected vertexes? Excuse me for being to new to this.
24  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: CollisionDropTest not working? on: 2004-07-28 00:09:31
I will be interested...
What version was when the collision test worked?

Quote
Odd.... the demo used to work...

The collision system does work, at least it did when I was working with Xith (I've been busy with other things and haven't used it for a couple months).

I might write a simple tutorial on using some simple geometry in the collision system. I am by no means an expert on any of it, but I feel like it could help people find a starting point. Would this be helpful to anyone?

25  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / CollisionDropTest not working? on: 2004-07-27 21:41:58
It looks like the test is broken - the balls fall thru the other objects. I also coudn't get the collision system to detect collisions. Is it working at all? Can some one post some test code?

Thanks,
Steve
