I found FP last year and Bubble Bobble was the table I used most Smiley

I started working on a table design but work got crazy, 6-7 days a week and I dropped it.

Yeah it does take too much work to get tables, but you have the basic outline there now for others to follow.

I think the maps for worms were all created by hand. Obviously they had some elements that got used in chunks like those icecream cones.

Make a web site
Put some good models on the site, not just test stuff
Put some good animations on the site, so you can demonstrate animation
Give the product a snappy name and logo
If you are going to sell it, the product should be better than free 3D programs
Make lots of importer / exporters to as many file types as you can.

Contact web sites and magazines that review 3D software, for a review and free publicity.
But it better be good or a bad review will kill it.

Notice how I didnt mention Java once up there, neither should you.
On a tech page on the web site feel free to talk about Java. Its not really a selling point to artists. They dont care about the tech they just want a good affordable tool. If you are saving models in a Java3D format certainly mention that.

Check out the WindowListener interface.

I made a class that implements WindowListener.

then you
 frameName. addWindowListener(WLClassName)

I was using Frame.
You can implement various gamepause flags when iconified and cleanups when its closing.
17  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: Probably going to get dogpiled... on: 2006-04-21 02:10:27
The usual advice we give to people at your level is start small with a simple project and build skills from there.
So forget about the current project and make a TicTacToe game. It wont take long and you'll learn things that you can use later and you'll have that very eluse item called: "a  finished project".
It has 2 players, some simple rules, its a board game (no animation), you dont really need drag'n'drop, has victory conditions.

I think as a player I would want application ping since it includes everything and can indicate a general problem.
21  Game Development / Networking & Multiplayer / Re: Gotcha #1 - Broadcast doesn't get recieved locally on: 2006-04-05 20:56:07
Regarding WOW yeah, I guess it is.
There is a ping bar graphic in WOW but it averages so much (I think) that it rarely changes even when there is noticable lag in chat.
I suppose its just something I got accustomed to since the graph didnt work.

Its also very immediate. You really notice the problem when your message doesnt come back.
If you send it out, with a local echo and dont get an answer, your first expectation is that the problem is the person you are talking to isnt responding, not that there is a server problem.

Asherons Call had a much more accurate ping and actually gave the number, very helpful. Although some touchy feely designer types might not like it.

Not advocating one way or the other, just trying to make it clear why some people like it.

22  Game Development / Networking & Multiplayer / Re: Gotcha #1 - Broadcast doesn't get recieved locally on: 2006-04-05 19:40:28

Maybe Im missign something but I really don't see the issue.

Just to summarize:

There is a difference between messages for Chat and for unit Updates.

- You dont want your own unit updates.

- But you do want your own Chat messages to go to the server and come back. From a programmers perspective you dont want that either. But from a players perspective they send a chat message and if it doesnt appear on the screen quickly, its a simple test of lag. Then the player can adjust what he is doing in the game based on how bad it is. This is how WOW and some other games work.

In Wow you can move around anywhere and never get dragged back. The only way to tell if things are (aren't) working right is to  chat, cast a spell etc... something that uses the server. Generally you only notice a problem when a spell effect continues for too long, or your chat message dont show up or combat is messed up. The best way for a player to gauge the extent of the lag is to send a chat message and see how long it takes to come back.

Once I get out there Ill have to start getting invovled in the JUG meetings... maybe we can even start a game-dev SIG Cool

Cool, I'm wondering if that comes with free pizza too?  Smiley

I'm not positive, but Im farily confident Project Darkstar will be opening up some Reqs for folks in the netx few months.  If you want to email me your resume I'll try not to lose it between now and then....

I'll send you something just so you know, its not impressive.  I work as an architectural designer. So if you need an addition on your new house or need a new house designed, I'm the guy.

I live in the Boston area. Its not too bad climate wise. This winter was rather mild.

I used to go to the NEJUG meetings at the Sun campus in Burlington but we got too successful. The meeting room holds 300 but we had too many showing up so  they required registration. Maybe it was the free pizza. Since it was usually a last minute descision to go, I stopped going.

I was watching Dr Who on friday and Turbine had a TV ad!   A TV ad! for D&Donline
It was pre-rendered cinimatic stuff, not in game. I think they could have made a better ad. The game graphics arent bad.
27  Java Game APIs & Engines / Java 2D / Re: Chek Mouse pointer INSIDE a image... on: 2006-03-10 01:05:58
Reread g666's post.

You have one image as you've shown, but you also have a second image that has each country a different color. You never display the second image,  you just use it to test country areas. Then you can test pixel colors.

If you dont like SimCity or TheSims then you probably wont like this either, unless they add more gamish elements that havent been disclosed yet.

Youngsters Tongue.
Heh  Smiley

I think the key point here is all the Maxis SimXXX games you *didn't* mention that were utter crap.

The main common feature? No plot, not enough "game", too little cohesion, too much "simulation for simulation's sake", no "score"/"points"/etc.

Worst of the lot: SimEarth.

Followed by other great bestselling (not) games such as SimAnt etc...

* blahblahblahh still has original boxed copies of simearth and simcity. Dont think I've got originals for any of the others.

Of course I didnt mention them, they were crap! I played SimEarth and Ant and I didnt like them. I did like SimCity and the various railroad games. Its still yet to be proved whether Spore will be a good game. Its a fine line sometimes between a good and bad game. Fiddling with a city, fiddling with ants, both could have been good but only one was.

I wrote a letter to Maxis after they made SimCity but before Ant came out. I suggested that they should make zones in SimCity like army bases etc.. so two sim cities could battle it out for land. They actually wrote back and indicated that they were working on a strategy game, which turned out to be ant, I was rather disappointed. The concept of battling ants was good but it just didnt play well.

I'm with Chris on this, I think it will alter the way games are made.

Oh, I also bought Galactic Civ II a few days ago. I played MOO and liked that. I havent played GCII enough, seems ok so far, I'm about to invade Earth.

Sure, but with emergent AI and procedural generation of EVERYTHING.  the ground work being done there could have far reaching effects on the development industry overall.

Yup. My conversation with a Turbine producer was basically me telling him they need to create content procedurally and him just finding reasons to not do it. They were too far along on D&D and LOTRO to shift. Of course I wasnt thinking of doing animation that way Smiley
