But now when the box shape is set to zero transparency the other shapes are bleeding through and showing  Sad

Help! Smiley

Here's my appearance init for the box shape:
    appearance.setPolygonAttributes(new PolygonAttributes(polygonFill,
            PolygonAttributes.CULL_NONE, 0));
            new ColoringAttributes(color, ColoringAttributes.NICEST));
    appearance.setTransparencyAttributes(new TransparencyAttributes(
       TransparencyAttributes.BLENDED, opacity));

   RenderingAttributes ra = new RenderingAttributes();

After going at it some more and reading some older threads here I found that adding this to the appearance setup fixes it:

RenderingAttributes ra = new RenderingAttributes();

Since this is my first post in a long time I just want to thank all of you guys working on Xith and making it available to the community at large.

My scene consists of one big hollow box with a whole bunch of smaller shapes inside it. My problem is when setting the transparency of the big box, some (not all) of the shapes start dissapearing from the view. And depending on the rotation of the box, some shapes will appear and other will disapear. The image I'm attaching shows the box with its polygon attributes set to POLYGON_LINE, to show you all the shapes that should be appearing in the scene, and 3 other views at other rotations with the transparency set. You'll notice that some shapes appear and disapear.

What I'd like to do is always have the shapes appear when the big box's transparency is set. Any ideas where I could be going wrong in my scene setup?

This is part of a pretty big program so providing code samples of the whole rendering process would be difficult, but if you feel a certain piece would help please let me know.

Thanks for the reply Yuri. I'll be entering a bug report with a simple test case in Issuezilla.
5  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Appearance Update Between Render Calls on: 2004-02-21 18:12:16
I'm trying to update the appearance of a Shape3D in between view.renderOnce() calls using the shape3d.setAppearance() function call. The weird thing though is that the appearance doesn't get visually updated until I apply a rotation or translation to the object (I assume the appearance would update too with a camera view change, but I use a fixed camera for my project). Is this expected behaviour? Is there an update call I'm supposed to make after changing an object's appearance?

Glad you found the reason for it not working JCD! I suppose it's almost time i upgraded that card Smiley

The info you're looking to gather:
WinXP, AMD 2500XP+, ATI 8500DV 64MB
Ran the demo's at 800x600:
Particle Gen (100 particleS) ~760FPS
NeHe's Cel-Shading ~95FPS
Cloth Sim ~280FPS
Flag Sim ~295
Water Sim ~240FPS
PerPixel Lighting ~370FPS
NeHe's Cel-Shading VS ~290FPS
PerPixel Lighting VS ~380FPS
Phong - N/A
Quake3 Model Ldr (moving) ~485FPS

And I'll chime in too to say that you've done some very cool stuff with these demos! Thumbs up mate!

I tried deleting the cache, but it's still the same problem.

I'm running it from source now and I'm still getting the black screen. I've double-checked that it's finding the data files (and it is finding them properly) so i'm still not sure what's causing the problem yet. I'll get back to it tonight when i get home (my work comp has an embedded intel gfx chip :-/ ).

Ok Smiley
I'll give your code a shot to see if I can track the problem.

Just tried again, and this is what i get:

How do i turn on the light?  Wink

Hmmm, ok, now it starts to load up displaying all the initial messages, the last one i see is "Starting ..." and then the screen turns into light grey and nothing happens.

I have a radeon 8500DV.

JCD, for the phong demo I get an error after picking the display resolution:

For some reason only the particle generator and the water simulation are working on my comp now. With the exception of the shader demos, all used to work fine before. FYI, i have a radeon 8500DV. The demos just die, without any error message, after the splash screen.

I'll try running it from source to see if I can track down the cause, but I thought I'd make this note in case you made a recent change JCD that might have caused the break.  Huh
13  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: Great Idea - Logo on: 2004-02-13 15:49:01
My favourite is the JProof #7.

Although, I also like JProof variants 2, 3, and 10.

15  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: Converting Screen Coordinates to World Coordin on: 2004-01-10 20:08:40
When I get more than one result from the View.pick() function, I'd like to be able to tell which object is "closest" to the screen. The easiest way I figured to do this is to convert the mouse click point to world coordinates and then compare distances between the converted world position and the node positions to find the shortest one.

But to be completely honest I didn't quite understand the discussion that took place in this thread  Embarrassed (i'm new to 3D).  Could shochu or anyone else please explain what the parameters in the "xithUnProject" function listed above are, and where I would get them from? (I understand what winX, winY and results are, but not the rest).
16  Java Game APIs & Engines / Xith3D Forums / Re: Background Color support added on: 2003-12-18 21:13:57
I'm trying to set the background to an image using the code below, but I'm getting the standard greyish background color instead. Am I doing something wrong?

                   BufferedImage im = ImageUtility.readImage("gfx\\bg.png");
                  ImageComponent2D ic2D = new ImageComponent2D(ImageComponent.FORMAT_RGBA, 800, 600, im);
                  Background  backGround = new Background(ic2D);
            catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace();}
