31 years! And I still can't do OpenGL.

That is supremely comforting!

So I am having a tough time learning opengl and begin to wonder if I am just a really bad programmer or if opengl is just 'that' hard. Then I realize something...I have really only been programming for maybe a year now.

I have only been programming for year, same as yourself. What i have learned so far is when you get stuck, take a break, most of the time im simply to tired to figure out the answer. Hit it up in the morning and i figure it out in a few minutes.

I get the same thing.. I become obsessed with a single skill. First it was freestyle nun-chucks, then guitar, now programming. I literally would spend 8 hour sessions without stop doing it, and guitar and nun-chucks I have become exceptional at. Often now I program for like 6 hours, and suddenly realise I don't know what day it is, where I am, what my schedule is for the next few days. I don't even know who is in the house with me, it's a weird feeling.

I am a composer for film and guitarist for many years now. I did the same thing with playing the guitar but nothing seems to make you lose track of reality quite like a coding binge.

Yes, it seems I have to be perpetually addicted to at least one thing at any one point in my life. Right now its coding, which really doesn't rate that bad on the scale of things.

Diablo 3 pre release!

No seriously well done. Controls are responsive and feel just like diablo. This game just needs an xp and equip system (obviously omitted to get under 4k) and it would go to a new level. I was hesitant to stand on the orange tile marker though as it had no stair design on it which made me think it was lava... lol

Anyway you sir will be getting my vote.

Hey this was neat, with a bit of work could be really good.

Problem wise:
pathfinding limited (as stated)
right-click does not work for mac (just add leftclick +ctrl)  Wink

Design wise:
I would also say move the gold to the top right hand corner. It feels weird buying stuff from the right but looking to the left to see you money.

Imo an enemy ai that digs and collects artifacts + gold as you do.
Artifacts when found are taken and stored at your starting area.
Enemies will steal the artifacts from you and you can do the same back.
You can also add defences to your base, traps etc.

Yea, I've thought about that too, but then I get into the physics behind it and deem it all impossible with the electricity outside being paused in time and not being able to reach the computer to make it work.

Clearly the bubble would be somewhat similar to Magneto's and charged with electricity.  Wink

I'll bring home, from work, drawings, diagrams, formulas, pseudo code, game maps, etc on blank paper swiped from the fax machine.

I do the same thing! All the problem solving logic is done, then you just get home and type it into the computer! And not to mention you got paid to do it  Grin

Hey! I managed to go see my girlfriend during this stint  Tongue
I just have a horribly addictive personality.

One of those nights i went to bed at about 2 am with a problem still lingering. Some time later i get up and type a line of code in and it works. So im quite happy until I look at the time and its 4.30... I must have been subconsciously thinking about it for 2 and half hours. Just creepy.

Dear lord.

Yes, I've had that happen. Many times. I know that I ate (There are plates around), I know I drank stuff (There are can stacks nearby), and I know I went to the bathroom (Because there is obviously none of that sort of waste in my vicinity). How these things came about? I don't know. Did I end up sleeping? If I did, I dreamed of code (Which happens with a distressing frequency).

You sir, know exactly what I am talking about. Days become measured in lines of code, not orbits of the Earth.

So i work Thursday through to Sunday leaving me three days off. So for almost two days straight I pump line after line of code into my game. Then about 5.15pm i get a phone call from work,

"Where are you?"
"What do you mean where am I? Im at home on the computer."
"Well your shift started 5 minutes ago."
"What do you mean?"
"What day do you think it is?"

A hole frikken day.
How did i lose a whole frikken day?
Well i hope the coding gods are happy.

This one is fairly good to get you started with animation, keyboard input and animations

And as Kappa mentioned, these tutorials are great for teaching you a decent approach to handling game states (menu, options, game etc) and a good game layout for slick. Though be warned their are some errors in the code  Undecided

If it turns out the way I envision, there actually is nothing in the market (that I know of) that is quite like it.

Kind of like Fighting Fantasy novel, meets Diablo, meets Dungeons & Dragons.

Hopefully have a working demo in a month or two. Anyway back to engine coding!

Note: Math.random calculates a integer, which is mapped into a float (type conversion + multiply).  Then you multiply that and convert back into an integer.  Another downside, if you're multi-threaded and multiple threads call Math.random, is that they will cause cache trashing if occurring roughly at the same time.  Do you care?  Probably not.

Not that this should be a problem in my single threaded, turn based RPG but what is the faster, multi-thread safe alternative?

hi all,

Im using the following to generate the damage for weapons .

Random r = new Random();
int damage = r.nextInt(6);

I need to print the min and max to my stats page so it says something like,

Damage: 1-6

Any ideas on how to implement this?

Haha, that is illusion: only one of them has ever sold in any numbers even vaguely deserving of the term "success". I rather agree with you: when I look back at them all I ever see is crap and problems that I wish I could redesign.

Generally though for RPG's the core mechanic (source of addictiveness?) is the old grind and reward system. The reward usually being gradual character growth (level up) and various cool items. The rest story, music, graphics, fighting system, etc are just various presentation mediums that help enhance the experience.

Everyone loves a good grind! I know that you need to be conscious of how much grinding you impose on the player however. For instance wow endgame stuff was like some horrible shift at work where you didnt really want to do it but you you kind of wanted the reward at the end.
