3  Java Game APIs & Engines / OpenGL Development / ? 3D physics collision testing with OpenGL on: 2013-03-13 15:56:23
Hey, I just had an idea of simulating 3d physics using offscreen rendering, and never found anything about this on the internet.

So basically,
- imagine an object with some movement force falling somewhere in space,
- I would create an small viewport 1x1 with perspecive inside the object facing the way of the movement force,
- I would render depth values of whole scene into the framebuffer
- then i would just check the depth value if its too close - boom - collision = true;

Dunno if it's worth the gpu and cpu time than regular collision detecting. Does anybody got any article about this or something similar?
4  Java Game APIs & Engines / Java 2D / Re: Fake 3d effect? on: 2013-03-13 15:33:44
to create an real looking fake 3d effect like that in that video you would need tousands of prerendered sprites for each object at different camera angles, which would probably overload memory if these sprites had to be at medium resolution, and I don't think Java2D is that great at managing memory. Most of old games like Diablo I and II, Age of Empires I and II used fake 3d effects, they created 3D models animated them and rendered their frames into 2D sprites which were used in game.

bad news for you... only thing that's fake (or trying to look like 3d) are billboards on trees, and probably the ground and shadows

Click to Play

@heezel do avoid creating multiple threads for the same project/game, anyway noticed you had some extra images in your new thread so copied those over to your original thread so you don't loose your replies.

Anyway really cool looking project, just curious you using some java game engine? or is it mostly written from scratch using something like an opengl binding?

Well, it's based on my own game engine which i started like 2 years ago, rendering  triangles Cheesy, so yes it's pure Java with LWJGL.

10  Java Game APIs & Engines / OpenGL Development / Is ARBShaderObjects.glCreateProgramObjectARB() up-to-date? on: 2011-03-05 09:07:29
Hay, well my problem is that I'm trying to compile and use shader.
I found a tutorial LWJGL-shaders but i think its outdated because they are still using 'GL11.glXxxx' in it.

Anyway I've tried to convert it to newest LWJGL. And it does nothing. (no shader compiled / no glprogramused ).
After looking for the reason I've found that the first command

is always returning '0'

From the tutorial sc:
shader = ARBShaderObjects.glCreateProgramObjectARB();

            vertShader = createVertShader("data/screen.vert");
            fragShader = createFragShader("data/screen.frag");
        else useShader = false;

You can see why i can't continue with the shader.

Does it return always 0 for you too?
