1  Java Game APIs & Engines / Tools Discussion / Re: Looking for a good IDE for a Mac OS X on: 2004-02-21 23:19:37
Thanx for replying.

well like i said, its at school, and while its easily got the money to go for an OS upgrade, all the IT ppl are lazy, so its not gonna happen.

I think ill give JEdit a try again, but with the latest development release this time, because the compatability page used to say that JEdit didnt work with java 1.4.1 very well on Mac, but now it doesnt and instead suggest to use the latest development relase.

Still if any1 else knows any toher IDE's, please give a shout.
2  Java Game APIs & Engines / Tools Discussion / Looking for a good IDE for a Mac OS X on: 2004-02-20 10:23:07
Hey,

i know alot of ppl ask for what shte best IDE and all, but the reason im asking this is because i need one that meets some fairly specific standards, that all my windows one's fail. So here what im looking for;

  • Works With Mac OS X (10.1)
  • A lighter IDE, i use Gel on pc, and so prefferebley im looking for something simliar, just highlighting, in build compilation, and class browser is pretty much it.
  • Free
  • Works with Java 1.4.1 under Mac (JEdit fails this)
  • Doesnt Need the terminal to install it.

So there you go. The reason for this is because at home i use a pc, but i need a better IDE for at school in my Software classes, currently they use Project Builder, which is the worst IDE for java i have ever used, being so bad, it is unusable. The reason for the no terminal is because the terminal is not availible to us, obviously the school thinks that where going to hack the main frame or something if we got access to it, so it needs to be a desktop installer.

Oh, one other thing, how does one go about using a .dmg file in Mac OS X?

Double click the dmg disk image file.

Well with the school macs, a double click on a .dmg file will result in the unkown file type, choose application to open it with, dialog. How would i fix this?

Thanx alot.
3  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: JButtons not updating there mouseOver state on: 2004-01-13 11:56:29
ive already looked through the api b4 posting this, and the JButtons tutorials is no help ethier. I think you have misunderstood me, i already have rollover, and mouse down icons set. My problem is that when changing JPanels, the buttons state stays what it was lat tie that JPanel appeared, so i am ending up with buttons that are displaying their mouse over image, when the mouse isnt over them.

So thats y i want a way of telling them that the mouse is no longer over them.
4  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / JButtons not updating there mouseOver state on: 2004-01-13 05:44:39
Hey,

i was wondering if there is a way to tell a JButton, or prefferalby every JButton on a panel, to update its state in term of mouse over, mouse down, ect..
5  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / MiniMap For SideScrolling 2D game on: 2003-12-18 12:26:49
Hey,

Im trying to put a minimap into my level editor for my SideScrolling 2D game. The area in which the level is drawn is within a JPanel, that is put into a JScrollPane, which then is put into a Jpanel, which is a tab on a JTabbedPane. All thats need to deal with the size changing ability of a map, because the user specifies the size, and a zoom in out feature is availible.

Anyway, i want to take the map the the Map JPanel is drawing, and shrink it down, and display it on another JPanel, as a miniMap.

I thought this would be rather easy, but cant get it too work. Ive tryed 2 ways, both times tring with both plain images, and buffered images.

Image image;
Graphics image_g = image.getGraphics();
...
public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
      ....
      paintComponent(image_g);
}

At the time this seemed like a good idea, but once it stuffed up, i actually bothered to think about it a little, and it seemed to me that this code would loop around and stuff up.

public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
      paintCommon(g);
      paintCommon(image_g);
}

public void paintCommon(Graphics g) {
      ...
}

This one didnt work ethier ofcourse, although i saw at the sun developer corner a post about this topic, and thats wat the answer was. However, i think my problem is something to do with the way im trying to get the images Graphics, as i think that even if i eleminated any painting to it, just trying to get it, still froze the program.

Thanx For any help.
6  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / A few Questions and One Swing Problem on: 2003-11-30 08:59:09
Hey,

Im about to start a new project where im going to be creating a side view 2D shooter game, that is multiplayer, same concept as Soldat if you have played it. So i just had a few questions;

1. What would be the best 2D API to use? and what degree of hardness is the one you suggest to use?

2. Does anyone know where i can find any information on how to create a level editor for something like this, where the levels will be able to be customized on a pixel by pixel basis.

And finally, One problem. Im creating a language selector in swing, and the language appear in a drop down combo box. I have a JLabel above this, with these two components in a Box layout arranged vertically. The problem is that when i add in the Combo box, the Jlabel gets indented a certain amount relative to the left hand end of the combo box, and  if i move the combo box  to try to align it up with the Jlabel, the Jlabel moves accordingly to keep at the same point relative to the Combo Box.  Does anyone know whay this is happening and how i can stop it, and let me just put it where i want.

Thanx alot.
7  Game Development / Networking & Multiplayer / Game Networking Logic Resources on: 2003-11-02 02:26:35
Hey,

ive only started doing some networking recently, and am wanting to make a network game, supporting ruffly up to 20 people is my desire.

I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some good learnign resources for this tpye of stuff, that focuses mainly on the game logic, as ive found fairly good resources, and understand setting up the connections and protocols already. As in, how the server should be structered, handling which aspects of the game, structuring of a common class to store each clients information in the server, ect...

Thanx.
