1  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2011 / Re: Moo4k [Completed] on: 2011-03-22 12:28:04
I'm flattered. Smiley

Have you considered replacing the targeting code with something like "attack the first planet you can attack" and then building up from there? My code is fairly terrible anyway.

BTW, try the code at https://gist.github.com/848867/ - it should now be much less of a drain on your CPU, as it will only update when needed.
2  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2011 / Re: Community Voting! on: 2011-03-22 00:32:07
Don't worry. I'd rather have the results delayed by a day or two than for you to feel horrible about the process.

(Have fixed up the indentation to be less mountainous.)

I'm afraid this whitescreens on my mac. Sad
6  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2011 / Re: 1kvaders on: 2011-03-01 10:02:20
Awesome! It's a bit more of a game than mine. Can I have a look at the source code? Mine is here:

About 560 kB of that is just the scaffolding of having a main loop and keyboard input listeners. So 1 kB is probably about the lowest amount of memory you could have a competition on. A competition full of half-baked space invaders clones, simple driving games, and maybe tic-tac-toe?
8  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2011 / 1kvaders on: 2011-02-28 23:40:36
So for amusement's sake I thought I'd see what kind of game fits into 1 kB of Java, given that about half of that seems to be taken up by overhead. This is what I managed to cram in:

http://www.metalbeetle.com/1kvaders.html

Click once to focus on applet. Then use arrow keys to move and space to fire. Don't let the green blobs get to the bottom of the screen.

It's fairly terrible, but just about qualifies as a game. (I won't submit it to the official contest as it's clearly terrible compared to what you can do with quadruple the space.)
9  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2011 / Re: Moo4k [Completed] on: 2011-02-27 13:09:19
I've submitted the source code along with the game, so the code will be be available shortly. Not that it will look much different than the decompiled code, I fear.
10  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2011 / Re: Moo4k [Completed] on: 2011-02-24 09:07:16
ra4king has got it pretty much perfect strategy-wise. Smiley I would only add to that that it's a lot cheaper to colonise than to invade, so at the start of the game, rapidly colonise anything that isn't Poor or Barren, and fortify each planet just after colonisation - as otherwise the computer will grab it from you.

The other thing worth mentioning is that the formula for how many ships you lose when attacking means that if you want to lose no ships at all, the number of attacking ships must be three times the number of the defences. (Planetary defences plus any fleet present.) And you can lose up to half your ships when attacking, so don't get into too many narrowly won battles, or you'll spend all your time rebuilding your fleet.
11  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2011 / Re: Moo4k [Completed] on: 2011-02-23 17:26:09
All my planets got captured and the game kept going on and on. There should be a Quit button, if you can fit it in.
EDIT3: Is it possible to move your fleet to another planet?

I'm glad you like it. I'm afraid it's within a few bytes of 4096, so while those two would be very useful additions, they don't fit without some re-engineering.

I *am* writing a cleaned-up version of it that supports proper multiplayer and some more stuff though. Smiley
12  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2011 / Moo4k [Completed] on: 2011-02-23 10:09:02
So I thought I'd make a turn-based strategy game, as I haven't seen much of that kind of game in the contest. Moo4k is a stripped-down space strategy game, more like a board game in that you get one action a turn.

Play it here

(Detailed manual further down that page.)

Thoughts?

FYI your game doesn't work on OS X at the moment. See this thread for a possible fix: http://www.java-gaming.org/topics/can-t-get-anything-to-work-on-a-mac/23434/view.html

Minimum requirements for this years contest are Java 1.6/6.0, so its likely many will compile for that version.

If your on OS X 10.5 64bit Apple provide a Java 1.6 build which you should install.

Ah, but none of the applets on the 4k page work, even the 1.5 ones like VVVV. I have the 1.6 Java, but it seems to be very difficult to convince any browser to use it.
16  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2011 / Re: Can't get anything to work on a mac on: 2010-12-03 17:24:08
What version of Java is it running?

Cas Smiley

1.5.0_26 from Apple Inc.

I consistently get the following error on Firefox 3.6.12 as well as Chrome and Safari:
General exception:

I have also had no luck getting a homemade pack200'ed applet to load.
17  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2011 / Can't get anything to work on a mac on: 2010-12-03 13:16:16
None of the applets on the 4k website work on my OS X 10.5 Intel MacBook, and the only minification I can get to work is ProGuard - no Pack200 or anything thelike. Sad

Any tips from fellow mac developers?
