Thanks guys, i'll try the maze thing nerb, and CodeHead That makes a lot of sense, can i compile this for java 6 without reinstalling java? or do i need to install an older version of java?

Is it possible that it's because i made it with a 64 bit machine and their running 32 bit?

So i created an entry for the latest LD but i found out half of the people who try it can't even play it, i tested it on another machine and i got an error about it not being able to find the "main class: maze.maze."

Here's a public link to my latest attempt at getting it to work. I always tend to have a lot of trouble with exporting these jar's.

If you were going to start again from the ground up. What would you do?  Like programming language, first game,  business strategy. Assuming no prior bias towards java already. Would you use java anyway? assuming you hadn't already had years of experience with it?

I've noticed you mention downloadable games aren't really the way to go so i've grown curious.

He didn't seem like a bad guy, but i get the feeling he was a troll, or he just wasn't all there. I catch people who act like him on forums for years, and i never quite understood it.. i think they're serious...

Anyway i don't think there's anything wrong with your avatar teletubo. I don't see how a picture of a real life person who's just standing there could be considered offensive.  it's not even implying anything, MJ was around kids all the time, he had a theme park right? Anything anyone gets out of it is their own imagination.

i started what is basically a space invaders clone at the beginning of the year.. still  not done..Given i didn't work on it constantly but i got stuck for weeks on stupid stuff too.

Anyway, i get the wanting to be ambitious, but it's pretty nice having a finished project to show off too. And when you finish your game you can force all your friends and family to sit down and play it. so that's always fun.

I ended up switching the images back to the imageicon deally. I don't know if that's really the best way to do it but the collision detection wasn't working with the url.. and i am still learning so i didn't want to make this more complicated then it had to be in the beginning.

Oh i think i just get what was up with the dot. it wasn't looking inside the jar it was looking in the operating system right? Ok i get that.

oh and if anyone's interested here's the beginning of my space invader wannabe game It's not impressive or even at demo status yet but you can shoot things and they will disappear Smiley so i'm happy about it.

i thought the '.' was for referring to the directory i was in, not the directory prior to the one i was in. *shrug

So if i understand this right, the URL is important for referring to the images within the jar file?

Hello! i'm still learning the ways of Java and eclipse, i've started creating a space invaders clone(gotta start somewhere right?) But the game isn't really where my problem is. I've spent the last few days trying to export to a jar file. And i finally managed it but then i hit a wall with my code within the jar trying to find the pictures.

Which is really where i'm still kind of confused. I found a site that helped me out and now the code works but i don't know why it works and that's bothering me more then anything.

i've imported the images into eclipse to help automate the export into a jar file. I was able to manually copy the pictures into the jar and it worked before but i'd rather eclipse just handled it for me.

Anyway in the jar the files are under a folder called /Images/ and here's the code i was using:

   private Image image;

   private String craft = "./Images/cannon.png";

   ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon(this.getClass().getResource(craft));
   image = ii.getImage();

Now i'm using

2 imgURL = getClass().getResource("/Images/cannon.png");
   image = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage(imgURL);

Now the code automagically works but i'm not sure why. I was wondering if someone could explain the differences between these two? Do i have to use the second one? is it more efficient? the path to the images looks like it was exactly the same so i'm not sure why the other one didn't work. I noticed i needed to import java.awt.Toolkit for this one for obvious reasons. But i'm not sure what's up with

Anyway i'd apreciate a point in the right direction. There's so much code out there and so many ways to do things that i'm not all that sure whether i'm heading in the right direction or not. This could be a horribly inefficient way of doing it for all i know.

I find anything more complex then the Swing timer to be a bit above my head at this point. But this site has been extremely useful to me. If you can't find better advice perhaps the Util timer might be the way to go?

I've been reading this Java 1.4 Game Programming book and they state that the Swing library was meant to be a replacement for the AWT library. Now i can't confirm the validity of this claim, but i am curious. Why wouldn't you want to use the Swing Library?

Thx, that wouldn't really be a problem then. i don't have any interest in the content.  Just the game mechanics.

Maybe i'll look up how to make a d20 game, they might idiot proof it for me. I know i should just read the legal documentation, but i have trouble finding this stuff and it all looks like gibberish to me. Besides the money i have a hard time seeing why anyone wants to go into the legal profession.

i've always kind of wanted to make a rogue-like using d&d dice rolls and character sheets. would that be possible? running from the 3.5 rules?  just curious for future reference, it seems cooler then making monsters do like 5 damage or something. Everything will kind of be "pre-balanced" that way.

nah i wasn't talking about a text box. I just assumed if you could do it in C you could do it in java. used to clear screen with a system call.
and the whole concept seemed simple enough to be possible in java.
