3  Discussions / General Discussions / buisness of mobile java games... on: 2003-01-13 16:20:25

Mobile Java gaming has too many players - Jan 10 2003

The central problem with mobile gaming in the past has been text games using SMS and black-and-white WAP games, neither of which has provided a compelling user experience to gamers, and both of which have suffered from an inability to monetise the gameplay.

hmmm.. is it really a better investment to create ringtones than java games for phones (as the article suggests) ?
4  Java Game APIs & Engines / Java 3D / tracking light ? on: 2002-11-27 16:13:52
Is there a way to know if light from a given lightsource is hitting a given surface ? The material class only has the switch to allow lighting to be enabled and the light hierarchy doen't seem to provide the functionality.
I need to know if light is hitting a given material (ideally at what angle, and area of coverage too).. any ideas ?
5  Discussions / General Discussions / Nokia N-Gage on: 2002-11-04 23:45:38
Anyone know if Nokia's new NGage is going to have a gaming capable JVM ? It looks like it'll have more oopmh in the processor department, so it'd be disappointing to have a lame J2ME VM.
I couldn't find any info, but on a hunch (and given Nokia's leaning towards Java)  I'd say it's likely.
Anyway, this looks to be a very promising platform.

First off - I appreciate the fact that these forums exist and the community surrounding it provides an astoundingly high signal to noise ratio. To me the actual software is next to irrelevant as long as it serves it's purpose. (This is, not

As for the use of PHP, I can understand. The most competitive players in web forum software market are still PHP based. Jive is pretty good, especially for largescale communities, but their pricing structure is aimed at the highend. The price/performance ratio of the various forums still points at the PHP apps.. some of the open source ones are quite good now too.

It's about the the best tool for the job.

(an aside in response to MS using it's own tools-  MS still uses BSD servers for Hotmail)

I really liked the feature on the old forum where you could see the new messages from the past 24 hrs, or past week..
The new forums have something similar looking, in that you can constrain search results to a specific time period, but you can't search on an empty string..  :(
if possible, that would be a great feature.

I trust this an appropriate forum to post, but I just read about the considerable layoffs at Sun.  I really hope this board stays around and the staff responsible for it are still employed. Keep up the good work.
