I think the binaries in CVS are not up to date. harsens did not commit/remove them when changing the sources. You'll need to compile them yourself, I'm afraid. (and you could commit them if it works)

Hi all,

I usually run all processes in Debug mode when starting something from my IDE to be able to investigate asa any problems arise. But with jdk1.6 (at least after 1.6.0-0_04) the speed is vastly degraded, compared to the run mode. With 1.5 is speed difference between 'run' and 'debug' is about 10%. The same app started with jdk1.6 takes 100 times longer to complete some tasks when the debugger is turned on (with debugger off it's about 20% faster than with jdk1.5). Esp. reflective access seems to be that slow, but 'normal' operation is slower by factor 10 at least.
How's that? Any hint on what to do? (updating the jdk to 1.6.0-0_07-b06 did not help)
Anyone with the same problems?

as i'm sure you're aware for floats it's testing for NaN values.
How's that? NaN != NaN returns false, but any other float value returns false as well, no? It would make sense with a ==, of course.

So the client needs to install your product first to be able to run mine? Huh Where's the improvement? It makes the Java distribution problem worse, doesn't it? Webstart and applets are not as nice as they could be, but they are installed if Java is installed, at least. For using your product the client requires Java and your plugin installed Undecided

and soon will support Linux

oh, and I need a special server application? Or can it be used with my L/WAMP?

Currently only Herwin (cvs login harsens) is working on ODEJava. I have restructured and improved it a little in the past. But I think that's it, regarding contributions in the last years.

Currently there is no actual alternative imo. jBullet, while very promising, still has issues with joints (no translational axes, rotational not that flexible), JOODE is very incomplete, jPhysX... well I don't like PhysX Tongue, and so on.
We are using ODEJava as most important implementation for jME Physics 2.

Re your proposals: Tutorial would surely be great. Having the binaries precompiled for the development version is nice, yes. I tried to provide those (with jME community help) in the past. At least for the releases this was successful. But if you don't have all the platform available yourself it's a pain to make them for the development version each time you change the natives.

I'd be happy to discuss ODEJava's future Smiley

I had the chance to test it with a special version of JRockit! They have a vm parameter to reduce the pauses the vm causes. I ran it with
java -jrockit -Xgcprio:deterministic -XpauseTarget:30ms
Comparing it to the Sun VM:

CPU: Core 2 Duo, 2.4GHz
VM: 1.6.0_06
OS: Windows XP 32bit
Client FPS: ~600
Client notes: no noticeable pauses
- edit, after copying server to jre:
Server time until stabilized: < 3 seconds (no difference to client vm?)
Server FPS: ~1000
Server notes: no noticeable pauses

JRockit time until stabilized: ~ 14 seconds
JRockit FPS: ~800
JRockit notes: no noticeable pauses

At least for jesek2 it could be interesting to try this vm to see if it reduces the pauses...

I've modified the post above after copying the server vm to the jre.

No pauses though. Maybe the testcase is too small? With deactivation and without help text I get >2000 fps...

Regarding pauses: I noticed that the memory consumption fluctuates. This probably means you are creating too much garbage. Profile your application (or library) to see if the garbage collection causes the pauses. If yes, find the reason for the 'costly' garbage and reduce it. It's common practice in Java game programming to reduce nasty garbage (but not every garbage is bad!) to calm down the garbage collector.
