almost a year later heres the website http://www.playercollab.com/ ... still not done

if you guys want me to put your game on the front page let me know
right now just has place holder content
2  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: code sharing project on: 2013-09-20 09:34:03
another update so i know how much the licensing for the code sharing part of the site is going to cost but i want to know if anybody is interested in actually using the system  ... and yes it will be free to use it
3  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: code sharing project on: 2013-08-23 23:31:45
i'll send you a PM right now
4  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: code sharing project on: 2013-08-19 17:35:10
ok another update .... the website is live it has a forum an assets store and news articles on gaming and im currently trying to get licensing for the system they used on this site http://code.ohloh.net/
but im not so sure if i should go with their system. it cant exactly be modified but its the only one out there that can search the code inside of projects as far as i know
so what do u guys think?
5  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: code sharing project on: 2013-06-22 17:35:31
lol sorry bout that i'll try and simplify it next time

and yea the advert system would be like an optional thing on the site
6  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: code sharing project on: 2013-06-21 21:58:55
i was probably talking about sales for people makeing games not the site itself but i might be wrong why dont u show me the rest of the quote

EDIT**
heres the rest of the quote and yea i was talking about sales people would make from advertising their game on the site or from helping make an open source game
in return is a place to advertise their game for free more exposure for your game = more sales plain and simple

just so u dont get confused i did change the "idea" a few times a bit...the plan was simple, people share code, but all the other mumbo jumbo was ideas of how to encourage people to submit code

like if they make a game. they need to advertise the game, so there would be a system in place for them to advertise their game to a target audience all free of charge but you have to advertise the advertising network before u can advertise anything with it so its not something that can be built right away ... its possible but takes time to get those people together and connected for it to be effective
7  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: code sharing project on: 2013-06-21 19:11:28
well its good to know people are still interested in this ... i already have the code for a beta site ready but its still a long way from a polished site it lacks security and anti spam(capatcha number things)

right now all it is is just a site where you submit info and search for info ... i wanted it to have accounts and profiles and all that stuff so people know who submitted what
its supposedly easier to make all this with drupal

and just for the record i was actually planning on making this a free service
8  Game Development / Game Play & Game Design / Re: Surivial Gameplay on: 2013-06-11 07:15:50
@NegativeZero
i think that sounds like an RPG game with level and stuff
9  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: code sharing project on: 2013-06-04 09:35:53
just an update i got some good news ...i have been working on the site and so far so good i have it setup so you can search for info thats on the database and im working on setting up a form for people to submit code along with other important links descriptions and stuff ... its not LIVE yet but hopefully i'll have a really basic set up for people to use as a beta site real soon
just a submit code and search for code system, no fancy stuff
10  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: i made a sprite but how do i set up the controls? (android) on: 2013-06-01 20:43:41
do i use scene2d.ui.Button or scene2d.ui.ImageButton ... do i need to use an actor somewhere?
11  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: i made a sprite but how do i set up the controls? (android) on: 2013-06-01 07:41:08
ok so i looked at the wiki and nothing about setting the buttons bounds
12  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: i made a sprite but how do i set up the controls? (android) on: 2013-06-01 01:25:18
the part about the booleans i understand. i remember i did something like this in app inventor but as far as writing the code in java how do i set everything up

do i set up the textures of the buttons as variables or something and the character sprite is that just a bunch of if and if else statements?
13  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / i made a sprite but how do i set up the controls? (android) on: 2013-06-01 00:55:35
ok so i made my sprite i have the texture atlas now how do i get some buttons on screen and set them up to control the character  is there any examples out there

only game examples i found were ones that make a character move with arrow keys on the keyboard im trying to make a game for android so i need to have buttons on screen (like left and right arrows and jump)

i know this might seem like a dumb question but this is the newbie section  Tongue

14  Game Development / Game Play & Game Design / Re: Surivial Gameplay on: 2013-05-30 22:56:13
you sound like your trying to build an rpg

by the way every game has an end even mmorpg games
you finish the mission/quest or whatever the rest would be trying to get a highscore or just the social part of the game is what would keep the games alive
15  Game Development / Game Play & Game Design / Re: Surivial Gameplay on: 2013-05-30 10:05:47
dayz is a mod for a game that already had tons of players of course its going to be successful

we're talking single player game here
one with no following ... thats when the graph works

16  Game Development / Game Play & Game Design / Re: Surivial Gameplay on: 2013-05-30 09:45:36
if you make it so theres a constant struggle that keeps the player fighting to survive then it becomes fun but if theres too much time where you just stand around and do whatever you want you'll lose the players attention

think of the gameplay like a graph

|                     ________
|     ___          /             \
|   /      \       /                \                            |
|  /        \___/                  \                           |F
| /                                   \                          |U
|/                                     \_______________ |N
-----------------------------------------------
                      TIME

if the player isn't active he's not having fun and you get a flat part on the graph

the trick is to get the player excited with a good hook like when you watch a good action movie its starts off with some crazy action scene you have no idea whats going on but your watching the movie cause its got your attention with that hook then theres always those ups and downs in the graph in this case the movie would have the boring scenes where characters talk(this is the down part) then all of a sudden bam theres people shooting and blood everywhere and those are the up parts of the graph

every good movie, game, book follows that graph they get you with that hook then theres a few small ups and downs and we all heard of the grand finale well that part is just a big spike at the end of the graph thats the part that seals the deal and makes people remember the game, movie or book

|                __                  /\___  |
|    _         /    \      __      /         |
|   / \       /      \    /    \   /          |
|  /   \___/        \_/       \/            |F
| /                                            |U
|/                                             |N
 ---------------------------------
                      TIME

a survival game could work but you need to find the right balance keeping the player entertained and having fun

alot of games have bosses at the end of each level to keep the player looking forward to something or they have a cutscene for the player to watch between levels

if your going with a free roam game then you need a story for the player to look forward to

any game can be turned into a good game its just a matter of good game design
17  Game Development / Game Mechanics / Re: Isometric Grid - Tiles as objects on: 2013-05-30 06:04:43
well i know one way of doing it is to use libgdx
heres an example https://github.com/libgdx/libgdx/blob/d0de5843edd4c9c4903188b203a9a3e098840b12/tests/gdx-tests/src/com/badlogic/gdx/tests/TiledMapAssetManagerTest.java

if your making it from scratch i cant help much with that
18  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: code sharing project on: 2013-05-22 06:34:52
i started working on the site i'll let you guys know when i got something up and running shouldn't be too long  Cool
19  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: libgdx game templates and free AD space for your game on: 2013-05-20 04:14:12
how exactly would that work? can people just sign up and write whatever they want?

Well, that depends on which provider you use.

Tumblr: Posts need to be approved by the admin before being published.
Wordpress: Has enough functionality that you can protect against spam while not punishing good people.
Blogspot: Don't think blogspot support multi-authoring. Can someone confirm?

i set up a wordpress site and you need to add authors in manually this might not work unless you know how to let them in automaticly
20  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: libgdx game templates and free AD space for your game on: 2013-05-19 20:14:33
this smart git? http://www.syntevo.com/smartgithg/index.html
21  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: libgdx game templates and free AD space for your game on: 2013-05-18 03:15:12
ok well wordpress seems like a good start ...

i was actually planning on makeing a site from scratch but with all those features i wouldn't be able to make it alone
kinda got me thinking why not make it an open source project/website (idk if theres ever been such a thing)

we can start useing the multi author blog while the big site is being made

22  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: libgdx game templates and free AD space for your game on: 2013-05-17 22:37:08
@HeroesGraveDev
how exactly would that work? can people just sign up and write whatever they want? cause i mean the whole point would be to have people share code without having to wait for it to get accepted

Why don't you just try it yourself before asking? Takes like 5 minutes to install/setup, and it's free...
it dosen't hurt to ask  Tongue ... but i'll try it too
23  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: libgdx game templates and free AD space for your game on: 2013-05-17 22:21:20
ok ok calm down dude lol i guess your not so skeptical about this working anymore  Smiley

theres just one small problem, i've never run a github project before Clueless

maybe someone who has experience with github can clear up a few things before we start

1.can people contribute code automatically without someone having to accept it?
2.is it possible for people to download only the project/part they want?
3.would projects be all inside one giant folder or split up ?
4.will it get messy if theres thousands of small snippets/projects?
5.how will people sort through the code to find what they need?
6.is there anything we should be aware of before we start throwing tons of code into github?

24  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: libgdx game templates and free AD space for your game on: 2013-05-17 10:02:05
@HeroesGraveDev
we cant just start building it and worry about the details later thats like saying lets build an mmorpg. we all know the age old story "noob attempts to make mmorpg" theres no happy ending. we need to plan it out first and be sure its going to work

@Nate
github could work if we use it for libgdx only, people share code snippets and small projects (read the last part)

if all goes well then we can go large scale and start the site that has every game engine/framework, different programming languages and the cash pot

i know you said
People would contribute to a site like you have in mind with the intention of helping others, not because they might get a pittance.

it might not be a pittance if your talking about a large scale group
imagine its everyone from every game engine all in one place sharing code
and the cash pot isn't just for one specific group its for everyone so who ever does the most useful, complex, projects gets the cash pot

then again that seems a bit sketchy some might have an advantage over others

you know what maybe its best to avoid money completely  cause it could cause problems

at first i didnt think github would work cause when you search for code its searching the actual code, so organizing snippets would get messy really fast. unless people place comments in the code with specific keywords to make searching for the right snippets easier kinda like using a filter. i dont know how well this would work but its worth a shot.

25  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: libgdx game templates and free AD space for your game on: 2013-05-17 06:48:13
what we should try and figure out is, if there was a central hub for people to share code like github and google code but with a strict focus on games. would people actually use it ?
Why not just use github? What does the site focusing only on games give you? You can have a github repo that focuses only on whatever you like.

the site focusing on games would give you money, a way to share your website, games etc etc

if you go around telling people "hey guys add your code to github" they wont bother if they get nothing out of it.
if you show them a website where they can get money for sharing their code now you got their attention give a good amount of time, a year, for a cash pot to build and they can contribute when they have time

Usefulness is more important than complexity.

And usefulness can imply complexity in some cases.
ok lets flip those

1st place most useful
2nd place most complex
3rd place most projects

so now we split the cash pot

1st=60%
2nd=40%
3rd=20%
26  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: libgdx game templates and free AD space for your game on: 2013-05-17 05:29:28
we could add another button for that  Wink lol but now we're spreading the cash pot all over the place so maybe just use three things

1st place most complex
2nd place most useful
3rd place most projects

so complex on top because it was the most work
useful could mean anything so second
and most project last because the range could be anything from small to large projects

27  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: libgdx game templates and free AD space for your game on: 2013-05-17 05:10:46
yea i was thinking about that as i was writing

heres a few options

most lines of code
most projects submitted
most complex project (maybe people take a vote on that one)

maybe create a way for people to mark projects as complex throughout the year so they generate votes most votes at the end of the year wins

like the "like" button on facebook but its a button to mark it as "complex"

hows that?

28  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: libgdx game templates and free AD space for your game on: 2013-05-17 04:36:31
lol well thanks for being honest, i guess alot of people would end up at this site thanks to google  Grin

what if the site was able to offer money at the end of the year for who ever submitted the most code?

make it a cash pot that people can donate to and the site owner adds to it so it will grow non stop throughout the year

hows that for an incentive  Wink
29  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: libgdx game templates and free AD space for your game on: 2013-05-17 01:13:20
theres plenty of options out there for iOS like unity 3d and corona mobile and UDK same goes for andriod but thats not really something to worry about

what we should try and figure out is, if there was a central hub for people to share code like github and google code but with a strict focus on games. would people actually use it ?

lets not get lost in the details for a second and lets pretend the system already exist and theres lots of code being shared. how many of you would be interested in using a system like this?
30  Java Game APIs & Engines / Engines, Libraries and Tools / Re: libgdx game templates and free AD space for your game on: 2013-05-17 00:03:59
custom code to do what exactly? cause i thought you just use the setup-ui then you have the libgdx folders for the platforms you want
