1  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: Oracle sues Google over use of Java in Android on: 2010-10-07 21:47:13
Google's 12th and 13th defenses say that google and users of android do have a (implied) license.  They are making a lot of claims here, I assume that is in case the judge throws out some of their defenses.  I am curious how the unclean hands argument will play out.  Oracle used to be for totally opening up java prior to buying sun.  What ever the case I'd assume google's clean room implementation avoided sun's patents if there was any doubt thta they couldn't win with respect to the alleged copyright violation so this might all be moot.  Though I agree with a blogger that said the biggest loser in this lawsuit is the Java language itself.
2  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: Oracle sues Google over use of Java in Android on: 2010-10-07 20:20:41
Google believes it has a license to oracles patents because they implemented a clean room version of java which is outlined in the copyright notice that comes with the jls and jvm specs.  Oracle is claiming that google violated that copyright, thus google doesn't have a license, and is now infringing on oracles patents.
3  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: Oracle sues Google over use of Java in Android on: 2010-10-07 19:00:09
yeh but the copyright isn't how Oracle control Java, the GPL pretty much gives that away. Its the patents that Oracle controls Java with.

Supposedly google did a clean room implementation of Java, rather than using the GPL'd code, so there should not be any valid patent infringement claims.  That leaves copyright infringement which is what googles response deals with.
4  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: Oracle sues Google over use of Java in Android on: 2010-10-07 18:03:50
Google is asking the court to invalidate oracles copyright on Java.  If google wins Java will have all open source code and oracle won't be able to control the code via a it's copyrights.  Java will be free and clear.

Personally I would like to google win and have java available free and clear of any corporate control.
6  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: UARG! JMF video playback ... does it work in any way!? on: 2010-01-12 01:06:37
If you go into the git tree there is a directory of examples including one that shows the applet embedded in a frame and manually setting the applet parameters.

Xiph.org has a pure java implementation of the Theora codec available in a signed jar.  It's royalty free and is playable, but still drops frames, on my crappy laptop.

The sale isn't final but that doesn't mean that oracle isn't whispering in sun's ear.

13  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / Re: John Carmack QuakeCon 09 Keynote on: 2009-09-28 02:59:08
They could activate simd for the 64bit compiler right now as data in the 64bit jvm is always 16byte aligned.  Unfortunately array objects in the 32bit jvm are difficult to re-align during garbage collection.  After I finish my current project I'm going bang my head against that wall again.
14  Java Game APIs & Engines / Java Sound & OpenAL / Re: no 64-bit binaries on: 2009-08-19 03:20:39
There are already some 64bit targets in the build file.  It looks like they are just lacking 64bit libs to link against.  It was pretty easy to get it to build a amd64 so for linux.  It shouldn't be too hard to fix for windows.  There don't appear to be any active developers right now though.

You can create swing components off of the EDT.  You just can't modify them after they've been realized off of the EDT.  The way your class is set up right now it realizes the canvas and modifies it in the constructor.  If you wish to keep this functionality then you must create your class on the EDT with invokeLater.  If you remove the initUniverse method from the constructor then you can create your universe object in the main method and then call initUniverse on the EDT with invokeLater.

Changes to the properties of a visible component must occur on the event dispatch thread.  You are creating and changing the properties of your canvas outside of the EDT.  As swpalmer points out, if you create your Universe object in the invokelater() method it will be run on the EDT.  Google swing and thread safety.

20  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / Re: Sun may sponser libelous company. on: 2009-07-28 01:28:50
I doubt that anyone at Sun even knows they advertise on the site.  Though perhaps some of the Sun employees here might want to let the marketing department know that they are running ads on a scam site.
21  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: Embedded JPanel as it's own thread? on: 2009-07-09 05:22:59
You shouldn't be calling sleep in the paint method.  That's a great way to make the system less responsive.  Try setting it up as an animation that lasts 300ms rather than locking the system up for 300ms.

25  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: What do you use to draw your graphics? on: 2009-05-03 22:57:25
I've been pretty happy with <a href="http://www.inkscape.org/">Inkscape</a> and <a href="http://www.gimp.org/">GIMP</a>.  Krita and Karbon will be updated soon when KOffice 2 comes out.  The betas crash hard for me.  I'm not sure if that's because of Krita or the open source radeonhd drivers though.
26  Java Game APIs & Engines / JOGL Development / Re: GLJPanel not rendering anything under Linux on: 2009-05-03 15:43:47
I know for sure that the RadeonHD drivers don't do 3d currently.  I'm not sure what the current status of the ATI drivers is with respect to the 3d stack.  AMD's closed source drivers are supposed to be the ones you have to use if you want a working 3d stack.
27  Java Game APIs & Engines / JOGL Development / Re: GLJPanel not rendering anything under Linux on: 2009-05-02 22:49:43
I assume you are using AMD's drivers not the open source drivers?

The main engineer behind tiered compilation died in the middle of last year.  I have not seen any changesets that mention it so I'd guess it's not a high priority.
