1  Discussions / Business and Project Management Discussions / [MMORPG] Days of Destiny - looking for GUI Artists, Devs & Graphics Artists!!! on: 2010-12-31 06:26:39
So, for the past few months a few others and I have been working on a game called Days of Destiny. (You may have seen recruitment posts for it littered throughout the net, posted before it was started)

What is "Days of Destiny"?
In a nutshell, Days of Destiny is/will be a 2D MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). It's set in a post-apocalyptic world where the fires and hardships of armageddon have concluded and the world is being completely re-built anew.
The world is a 2D top-down view of tiled maps, while combat and specific other parts of the game will also be 2D, but side-on.
The basic concepts are similar to many other MMORPGs (for what is an MMO without levelling, stats, equipment and the like?!) however we hope that once they have been completed we can move onto exciting, original ideas which are still being explored, discussed and for the time being, a secret.

Technological Details
Days of Destiny is a game completely developed in the Java programming language (both the client and server).
It uses OpenGL for rendering, with LWJGL (LightWeight Java Game Library) as the wrapper around it.
The GUI is handled by TWL (themable widget library) which is written by our very own MatthiasM.
Networking uses the KryoNet library.
Database storage is implemented via MySQL, and when an official website for the game is written, it will be in PHP.

Snapshot of the game so far:
Please take a look!

Interested in joining the project?!
GUI Artist: This spot is currently vacant, and we *really* need someone to fill it up! If you're decent with graphics and user interfaces, please contact us if you're willing to join!

Java Programmers: While there are currently a sufficient number of developers, a few more wouldn't hurt.
- Dedication to the project (minimum: a few hours a week)
- Java programming experience (minimum: 2 years)
- Game programming experience (minimum: a few small games)
- Not necessary, but would really help: experience with databases (especially MySQL), or any of the libraries listed above

Graphics Artists/Pixel Artists: Must have decent experience with graphics.

Current Team Members

- MatthiasM - Developer, GUI Developer
- Json - Developer
- Ken - Developer

Goodjob Matthias Smiley

You never know, there's always a first time for everything. D:

I've already found a couple of people who seem decent.

Updated first post, the development's started!

I've already tried by myself quite a few times, like I stated in my first post. Sometimes I thought I was probably going to get somewhere but later on I'd always lose motivation/interest because progression was just going far too slowly and I had no time Sad

Riven: I can always give it a try, right? Wink

TheAnalogKid: I've already written quite a few really simple games, and this is really just to challenge myself and have some real fun along the way.

So... I've come up with the great idea of creating an MMORPG in the Java programming language! It's already been started, although progress will speed up when more people have joined the team.

Project Details

Game Name: Days of Destiny

Concept: A 2D MMORPG. The outer world (eg. travelling, chatting, etc) will be a bit like the world in Pokemon (tiles, 1 step per tile, yada yada ya) while things like combat will be more arcade-themed (fast paced, skill-dependent combat - although weapons/armour will obviously still play a part. maybe a bit like Street Fighter or Super Smash Bros Brawl?)

Setting: In a post-apocalyptic world, but with super-advanced technology instead of being blasted back into the stone age by the apocalypse, so kind of like a super-modern setting? (and as for how there's technology after an apocalypse: maybe some awesome techno-center was saved from the blast or something like that?)

Storyline: Haven't started thinking about this yet. But I'm sure it won't be too hard to come up with something awesome.

Programming Language: Java (duh!)

Client-side: Slick/LWJGL ( /, TWL for the GUI (, TilED for world (
Server-side: MySQL for database storage (
Networking: Not sure yet, possibly Apache MINA or just java NIO's Sockets

So... basically I'm here to ask if any of you are interested in joining this project?

Programming Skill: Basically, good Java knowledge/experience, and preferably some experience with Slick, although not necessary, since Slick is a pretty easy to learn library.

Time Requirements: If you're interested, please only ask to join if you have at least an average of 30 minutes a day to work on this; preferably, 1 hour a day free. I'm going to fork out at least 1-2 hours a day myself.

On a side note, I'm also looking for GUI/graphic designers, please drop me a note as well, if you're one and interested.

If you're interested and have questions, or wish to join this project, please reply to this thread, send me a PM or send an email to
