1  Game Development / Shared Code / Re: Line of sight through 2d polygons (shadows, field of view) on: 2009-10-27 03:25:55
i have wasted the last 30 minutes trying to replicate the bugs mentioned above but no luck

seems perfectly made here
2  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / Re: cant remove java webstart application on: 2009-10-25 19:10:42
Under Windows go to the control panel and double click the Java icon, at the bottom under Temporary Internet Files click the "view..." button. This will show all the webstart apps that are installed and it will give a convenient way to remove them.

that is the way i was using but for some strange reason the webstarts that i have downloaded werent there this time

the javaws.exe -viewer worked ok

thank you anyway
3  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / Re: cant remove java webstart application on: 2009-10-25 11:50:52
i suppose i dont write \javaws.exe -viewer but \javaws -viewer?

i have a bunch of  jre directories and i did it for every single one of them

thanks for the info
4  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / cant remove java webstart application on: 2009-10-25 01:17:22
i was checking some games with webstart

and started running out of hard disk space
i used to be able to find them in the control panel and remove them but i cant find anymore (go guess why)

where are they located on the hard drive? (so i can remove them by deleting them manually)
5  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: save random number sequence on: 2009-10-24 14:51:07
thank you for the code (and pass my thanks to Riven)

being able to continue the sequence of random numbers (even if its not needed for DnD) strikes me as beautiful, so i want to do it.
thats why i tried, i couldnt, i asked and i learned

(maybe i or somenone else will find a good reason of using it apart from DnD)
6  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: save random number sequence on: 2009-10-23 20:08:04
Quote
Generators each have a state. You simply need to save and restore this state information to continue the sequence.

dont really get it, the only info tha a generator holds is the seed
(of course i am wrong, but thats what i have managed to grasp so far)

Quote
thanks for the link (didnt really get much, but thanks anyway)

Quote
O.K.  I'll bite:  Why do you want to do this?
in my (miserable) attempt to creating a Dungeon Master assistant software
i have noticed that people use their laptops and notebooks and netbooks and iPhones and..
and ofcourse they are really spoiling the fun but since they do it, why shouldnt i write a software?

the main idea is this: all (pseydo) random number generator algorithms try to fulfill some statistical criteria that apply to (trully) random numbers. but, as the Law of Large Numbers dictates, the sample (the random numbers used in the game) must be larger than countable in order for the hypothesis to be true (randomness). since the game of DnD uses a lot of dice , i believe that it can improve on the illusion of random numbers , in comparison to just changing the seed and using the same math from the beginning. for example having a day of luck and another of bad luck instead of having an averge day everytime

Quote
This code will always generate the same sequence of 'random' numbers from a given seed. With this you can go back to any previous states by replacing the current seed with one saved from an earlier state.
if only i were smarter i would be able to trully understand this piece of code
it is what i am looking for, i think
and 65.000 are more than enough random numbers

thank you both

7  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / save random number sequence on: 2009-10-23 12:22:56
i couldnt find a good way to express the subject in the title so, if what you are about to read is not what you thought you would from the title, sorry!!!

read about the random number stuff, algorithms etc,,

what i didnt find anywhere is how to save the place the sequence has reached so far, so the code can continue from then on

the game asks the RandomNumberGenerator for a number
the first generated number is returned
for the second request the RNG returns the second number the specific algorithm generates
and so on

after the game stops,  i want it for the RNG to be able to know how many numbers it have generated so far, so as to continue the process of the "generation" from that place of the sequence

the stupid way is to save the number of numbers generated, and during the game initiallization ask for the RNG to create (and dumb) as many numbers as have been created....

do i make sense?

thank you

(my guess is that there are algorithms that allow you to pick the place of sequence you want it to start generating from and not from place 1 all the time.. but i cant seem to find any, if only  i were smarter i would create my own...)

java installation damaged.

I have one just like that.

i am 99% sure that this is the case
i downloaded some code from the official Sun tutorials and tried to compile them, some imports didnt work (like java.nio.file.attribute)

thank you all for the help

went to my university, and tried to create the jars i needed at the computer lab
they are working ok

so i guess there is something wrong with my computer

any ideas? i guess its the same problem i had with executing the online demos of JOGL (which i did compile and run locally)

but the sound keeps playing while i am still writing this line
weird, isn't it?
11  Game Development / Shared Code / Re: Line of sight through 2d polygons (shadows, field of view) on: 2009-10-12 12:13:41

Look up how to include jars on the classpath so you can include JTS, and use the source code I provided rather than the jar. What IDE are you using? In netbeans it's easy to include jars.

i use JCreator and i am seriously thinking about changing it
i will give it a shot when i have time
12  Java Game APIs & Engines / Tools Discussion / Re: GTGE on: 2009-10-12 12:09:36
i see
thank you all for your time and answers
it does look good (played the games in the show case, not very excited by the games themselves but the performance looked great)
13  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / Re: cant create jar on: 2009-10-12 01:31:37
no its not in a main class
i do not use outside libraries
its only for .class files and a gif
i created the manifest file
run the jar command
the jar was created
double clicking doesnt start the app

what is the Class-Path header for?
do i need it?
(all of my class files and gif and manifest lie in the same directory)

thank you for your answer
14  Java Game APIs & Engines / Tools Discussion / GTGE on: 2009-10-12 01:27:00
anyone know what happened to it and stopped updating?
or do the creators consider it a finished project?
15  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / cant create jar on: 2009-10-11 23:48:23
(i would have placed this topic in the newless clubies, if it was about jarring a game, since its not i thought its more appropriate to place it in the off topic section)

i have been reading about how to create an executable jar file, i have read every single online tutorial plus a couple of chapters from my universities books but still cant do it
am i retarded or what

i do manage to create the jar file, which i guess means that the jar utility works, when i unzip to check the insides everything (class files + Manifest with the correct Main-class: attribute) is there

but when i double click it nothing happens
when i run the application from my IDE, it runs
i also downloaded a random jar from the web to see if the execution process has any problem but no, it executed properly after double clicking

so what might be the problem? should i read the documentation of the jar format in the sun site? its way too long and way too technical for me to understand (not the tutorial about how to use, the documentation of the jar format) and even if i did i am not so sure i would understand the inner workings of the format, and even if i did i am not so sure it would help

i'm gonna stop my for-no-good-reason writing spree now

all ideas are welcom
16  Game Development / Shared Code / Re: Line of sight through 2d polygons (shadows, field of view) on: 2009-10-11 18:44:14
not that i understood all that high level stuff you are talking about

here is my problem

downloaded the *.jar (which i assume is the compiled code)
and the dependency jar

so i double click the LineOfSight.jar and i am expecting it to work
(it works fine when using the jnlp)

it opens the "Progess : Just a few Moments: Quit (Button)" frame and never executes

what can i do to run it as a desktop ? (and not compiling the source i was given generously)
17  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / Re: protecting code on: 2009-10-11 13:50:49
thank you all for the info and opinions

edit: in case someone is interested i will post my decision and the  (hopefully good) impression of the buyer of my program
18  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / Re: protecting code on: 2009-10-11 00:06:47
thank you for your brutal honesty
your logic does seem to stand on the side of righteousness

what if its worth little money, about a month's beer money (though i do drink a lot) and i really need it? (still a student)

so i should make my app into a jar wrapped by an exe (saw that option in a software) and then explain why (and possibly how) to install JRE

edit:
question : does anyone know (or can guess) how the trial version works?
i mean, if i get a trial version of a painting software, after 30 days it will stop functioning, however my images saved in jpeg and png format will stay forever on my computer

if i download the trial version of such a program (i am considering Jar2Exe), will the exe generated keep working after the trial period? (have sent them an email, but i am not so sure they will answer)
19  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / Re: protecting code on: 2009-10-10 23:11:39
yeap, i read about obfuscators
and AOT compilers (Excelsior included)

the problem with excelsior is that i have to buy it
(and i am not so sure that it makes it so its not necessary for the client to have the Java runtime environments installed)

isnt there a free open source similar project?
( i am looking and i will post here if i find one)

and what about the gnu compiler? can i use it?
20  Discussions / Miscellaneous Topics / protecting code on: 2009-10-10 21:16:33
written the server
written the client
found someone to buy them

how do i keep him from reading my code?
i have read stuff about obfuscation and A-O-T compilers

also, if possible, i would like to have both the server and client not use a locally installed JVM

(didnt know where to post it, so offtopic seemed the most appropriate one)

thank you

are you sure you are using double buffering correctly?
22  Java Game APIs & Engines / Android / Re: Sound Synthesis ? on: 2009-10-06 17:45:27
thank you for the info!!!!
23  Java Game APIs & Engines / Android / Re: Sound Synthesis ? on: 2009-10-06 13:13:00
i mean the same thing that java sound synthesis means

having a way to create a program by which the user will hit buttons (or whatever) to create dynamically generated sound

or simplier,
can you create a sound creator/mixer ?

i have been searching the APIs, cant find something relative,
maybe there is a way to port the Java Sound API to the Android platform?

thank you for your time
24  Java Game APIs & Engines / Android / Sound Synthesis ? on: 2009-10-06 00:22:26
is sound synthesis possible with the Android SDK???

hehe yeah me too.

umm, am I supposed to just fall eternally??

to me its more like floating in the middle of an ocean, no land at sight
(out of topic for last time , promise )
27  Java Game APIs & Engines / Java Sound & OpenAL / Re: Midi, SF2 and Synthesizer... on: 2009-10-03 12:16:00
i think he was just kidding, since i posted in a "dead" topic

anyway, you dont have to make it work just for me, i am new to the forum, so i scan it, looking for something interesting and then reading about it

so if you have abandoned the project, leave it
thank you either way
28  Java Game APIs & Engines / Java Sound & OpenAL / Re: Midi, SF2 and Synthesizer... on: 2009-09-30 18:15:22

29  Java Game APIs & Engines / Java Sound & OpenAL / only one MIDI at a time on: 2009-09-30 18:07:02
i ve been reading about Java and Sound
this is what i get:32 channels for sampled audio 32 channels for MIDI
so i suppose that if you have a MIDI sequence with 7 instruments, 7 out of the 32 channels are being used (or one channel for each sequence? )

why cant i have another MIDI sequence playing Huh i have 25 remaining, unused ( or not ? ) channels

its kind of a theoritical question,so i suppose i will need a theoretical answer ( e.g. this was done by Sun engineers for reasons A,B and C)

thank you
