i may change that, im not a mac user and cant really access one to test but i thought that ctrl+click wasent purely a right click, and may trigger other actions, ill look into it! (i did have it as ctrl click at first and it didnt work and i didnt have time to work out why)
2  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-25 16:49:53
well i dont know about that but ill take the complement, thank you! Cool

i just need to get some users on the site now (or advertisers if anyones interested!)
3  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-21 11:48:48
no it's the longer one, but i tried to include more visual examples and make it clearer / cover the things people were confused about, do you think ive made it worse? It's very challenging the art of getting information across quickly!
4  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-21 08:26:04
Sure it does do that, as in the instructions should pop up before the player gets to the game whatever route they take, but a lot of people just click skip or play strait away without reading, i imagine that is what you ment dishmoth?

in a nutshell, a record of each game is kept on the server when the game starts, the gameplay info from the client is serialised and sent over a standard HTTP connection, and then verified aginst the initial game orientation, so really it's not the scores that are being passed back but the gameplay, so packetsniffing will be of no avail unless you can replace the info with legal gameplay info, which you could falsify by picking apart the code and plugging a load more code into it, but it would be a lot of work, it would be a LOT easier to obtain the high score by playing the game  Cheesy

There are a couple of other small things too but i might keep them as my trade secrets, but ive described the main stuff there.

No php, pure Java/JSP on my server (Tomcat), there are a few things going on behind the scenes so false submission of scores by the manner of packetsniffing or decompiling of any client-side code should  be easily differentiated from real score submission. Thanks for the tips though!
6  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-20 12:25:34
Ive changed the instructions on the game, if anyone could have a look and let me know if its any clearer that would be great, thanks!
7  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-20 10:52:37
I have thought of that! Whilst not using SSL it should be fine, if anyone wants to try and submit a false score let me know, be a good test of my solution (to see if it works or not!), sniff away!
8  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-19 14:49:34
Hiya, ive heard that one a few times, i will update the instructions to make them clearer, a lot of people having touble with the swapping element!

Nothing to stop someone to write a program to emulate  the users actions, the code is (well should be) obfuscated so it would have to either invovle un-obfuscating it or writing a program to read the visual state of the game and play it, which would be a lot of effort when it comes down to it. Im relying on the same premise that trys to stop forging money, ie if it costs more to make it than what you will gain what's the point! The amount of time it would take someone to write a program like that just wouldnt be worth the bother!
9  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-17 17:44:43
Hiya, glad you think the game is fun!

Re the prize restriction, im not sure about the laws internationally regarding giving money away, the game dosent count as gambling or anything in the UK and most of the US (minus a couple of states i think) but i cant afford to get a lawer to tell me the international situation, maybe i will post a question in the biz section!

Thanks for the feedback.
10  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-17 13:52:24
Thanks to you both. Im glad you said it's fun, as I mentioned I find it hard to tell! Thanks for rating the game also.

I agree and Im going to work on a few bits presentation wise soon, just need the time. I understand your comment on the domain name, it's quite tacky, I was trying to come up with something that might grab peoples attention, but maybe i went to far!

In answer to your question, it is my first game but it went through a lot of iterations and changes before it got like it is now, it took me a while Smiley

Thanks again for feedback, really useful and i appreciate you taking the time to do it.
11  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-15 21:17:07
Excellent, much appreciated!

I agree with the feedback, i will work on it when time allows, it's very useful to hear so thanks Smiley

When you say span senses is that in your browser or in your mind (like spidy-sense)?!

Thanks for checking it out, very grateful.
12  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-15 10:14:42
excellent, thanks for playing it and taking the time for feedback, some good points to work on, my first game so a lot too learn!

in the game the longer the chains the score exponentially rises, but i havent made that very clear i guess!

i find it very hard to review the game myself as when you write something you become quite blind to the gameplay after a while i feel, its a toughy...when i get time ill try and revise it slightly...

Thanks!
13  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-15 08:19:21

ok, ill put a non-registering version up tomorrow, but you wont be able to win prizes!
19  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-13 17:05:30
does the reward of a new java game not justify the registration! Tongue
20  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-13 16:52:30
hello, again thanks for replying.

The ads will just be pay once for the display for a period of time regardless of the clicks, so no chance of anyone clicking just to bump up the pot amount. The smallest ad (10px by 10px) costs 60p for a month, which would on average buy you about one click through using adsense, so if you get more than one click in 30 days, youve saved money!

a proportion of the ad money goes to the pot, depending on how many people / advertisers use the site, but it wont be less than 50%!

Glad you like the look, it's the second site ive ever built, it was a challenge!

Thanks again...

ps i think i may have underestimated the resistance to registration forms!
21  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: Zapple! on: 2009-08-13 16:26:47
Thanks for looking.

Feedback taken on board, would be a good idea to let people see what they are signing up for, its a very small reg form though!  Smiley

Stupidly i didnt sign up to googleads till a few days ago and they said can take up to a week so waiting at the mo, did try adbrite but the adverts were absolutly terrable, advertising for wigs etc, not very contextually matched!

Thanks for looking! Grin

23  Games Center / Archived Projects / Zapple! on: 2009-08-13 15:55:28
Hello everyone!

Ive been waiting a long time to be able to finish my site i've been working on, it's my first game and I would love to get some feedback on it!

Its a site where you can win money if you hold the top score at the end of a weekly tournament, money for the prize comes from advertising so if anyone wants some cheap advertising then dont be afraid to use the site!

Let me know what you think (fingers crossed) and if you encounter any bugs or problems then please let me know...

24  Discussions / General Discussions / Free banner ad display on: 2009-08-13 10:58:15
Hello everyone. I have been developing a small website which hosts a simple skill game. I want to make the site publically available but i was wondering if anyone wanted me to display a vertical banner ad for free (120x600) while i work out what advertising scheme to use (so it will only be for 1-5 days anyway). Preferably it would be an ad for something similar, ie online free/skill game(s) and looks good! Let me know asap if anyone is intrested.

Thanks! Cool
25  Discussions / Business and Project Management Discussions / Game Only online advertising on: 2009-08-13 09:45:19
Hello, does anyone know of any online ad schemes like adsense or adbrite that offer game only ads. I ash as adbrite and adsense have the habit of displaying irrelavent ads, and you cannot display ads by catagory ie entertainment. Any suggestions?
26  Game Development / Networking & Multiplayer / Speed test for my VPS on: 2009-07-22 10:15:49
Hello all!

Im currently running some speed/load/stress tests on a server (VPS) which is to host a java game i am writing (VP :-*that I am leasing, but I've realised that my 2Mbit/s connection is limiting how far I can actually go. If anyone is on a higher connection would they be able to assess the speed on my server for me (it would be handy if i had a 100mbit connection but unfortunatly i dont!). Here is the ip http://216.154.221.138/. If anyone does do any testing please let me know the parameters and results you might get!

Thanks!
27  Game Development / Networking & Multiplayer / Re: Java applets flicker in browser, is it just me?! on: 2009-07-16 17:44:58
i feel a bit stupid now, and this has happened in the past, becuase i moan about this issue and check out some applets using firefox (which is what i usually use and therefore where i notice this proplem) and also safari, and they are all completly fine, no flickering whatsoever. I think it happens about 90% of the time, but occasionally, magically, they are fine and dont look like a cheap piece of rubbish. What is this, could is just be how much load my own comp is under?? Huh
28  Game Development / Networking & Multiplayer / Java applets flicker in browser, is it just me?! on: 2009-07-16 16:18:04
Hello everyone!

Ive noticed with applets i have written, or applets on other people sites, that they flicker when scrolling up or down the page. Does everyone else experience this or is it just me / my set up? Does anyone know a fix for this? I imagine it's because everytime the page is scrolled (so the viewport changes) that a repaint() or refresh call or some equivilent is performed upon any containing applets to be able to keep the view up to date, and if a anim loop is running this could take a normally 60fps app to a much higher amount which it cannot cope with. Would i be completly wrong in assuming this?

For an example have a look at the alcamy game from popcap which is one of the few they have on the site which is java based http://www.popcap.com/games/free/alchemy?mid=alchemy_pcweb_en_full

any insights on this would be great!
29  Discussions / General Discussions / Tomcat 6 stress testing on: 2009-07-13 17:46:37
Hello all. I am going to be running some tests on a standalone Tomcat 6 server which runs a couple of web apps i have written. I just wanted to ask for any advice on how to load/stress test, weather its and good software used, what to look out for or what the typical bottlenecks can be.

I understand every problem is different and unique but as this is my first time doing this i was looking for any helpful tips!

Thanks for any help given! Huh
