1  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: T.H.A.D. on: 2013-03-30 11:23:52
My first impressions :
- the abbreviated title for your game, T.H.A.D., is very confusing. With such a title, some sci-fi game is expected, whereas it is not the case at all. Why don't you stick to True Heroes Always Die ? I find it much better and actually not so long  ;
- the introduction story is very obscure ;
- the place where the game starts is a bit confusing. It feels like the player is already into the middle of some dungeon. You may add a lot of green to your starting level, with some grass and trees, and let the surface ruins of your old structure in black and white ;
- I found your game screen far too large ;
- I was not able to pick up items laying on the ground, using the [ENTER] key. The user interface for the inventory is deceptive, as it suggests that the mouse can be used to select items, whereas it is not the case ;
- it seems that some diagonal moves allowed my character to go through some pillars and buildings ;
- using colors into the event message list would improve a lot its readability ;
-  you may improve a lot the sprite of the main character ;
- surprisingly, I found that Fear4K had more impressive graphics, without even considering its visual special effects. Its procedural generation gave better results...
2  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Your top 3 of the most unappreciated games on: 2013-03-26 21:55:30
The three most underrated games this year, IMHO :

B4llBasher
http://www.java4k.com/index.php?action=games&method=view&gid=433

Behind the wall of sleep
http://www.java4k.com/index.php?action=games&method=view&gid=468

CodeGolf4k
http://www.java4k.com/index.php?action=games&method=view&gid=466

I would like to mention ApoStress4k too, the 2013 game with the craziest gameplay. IMHO.

Shame on you, appel, for not being a sheep.
4  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Community voting results on: 2013-03-21 19:15:36
All participants, receive my congratulations for all these great games.

Although I prefered Dord over Rainbow Road, I admit that the first place is well deserved for zeerone, who is such an amazing game programmer. zeerone, please make us a commercial game next year and let this contest be fairer ! Pointing
5  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Behind the wall of sleep on: 2013-03-20 13:39:47
Java4K judge here, before I finish rating your game: how do you get past the monsters after the 2nd door? Smiley

Amazing game btw, this is definitely in my top 10.

1. Avoid the first monster with the first ladder then climb the second ladder.
2. From the top of the second ladder, jump ( and don't just fall ) on the head of the first monster below you, and from there, on the head of the second monster - yes, it makes a big jump.
3. Avoid the third monster with the third ladder.
6  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Flywrench4k on: 2013-02-28 07:43:25
Just made it through all 16 levels once again, without any technical or other problem noticed. The experience gained on my previous tries some weeks ago helped me a lot. Level 14 was still the most difficult in my opinion. Still quite a hard game on the whole !
7  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Fuego! on: 2013-02-28 07:26:14
I find the difficulty level totally acceptable as it is now. I reached the 4th stage without complaining.

At least, no one will blame you for not listening to your audience !
8  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Frog Solitaire on: 2013-02-28 07:20:06
Your design is nice, it feels completely appropriated for this kind of game. But it also makes us sorry as there is no animation for your cool frog.

And if you have some room to add more levels, but lacking time to create original ones, you should not hesitate to "borrow" a few ones from similar games. However, 12 levels is already a good number.
9  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Behind the wall of sleep on: 2013-02-28 07:10:22
Quite a hard game, but this is very fun, original and well executed. I'm really curious to see the end of it.
10  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Sorcerer4K on: 2013-02-28 07:08:36
The design of your game is great and it is also impressive technically. The gameplay is quite good, however what about indicating the number of remaining enemies on screen ? Because cleaning each country from all its invading ghosts is the goal of your game, isn't it ?
11  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: fear4k on: 2013-02-28 07:03:40
With your ending statistics, now I feel a real sense of achievement while playing your game. Thanks !
12  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: fear4k on: 2013-02-27 19:31:11
Quite impressive on a technical level, and also good looking. However, this is another surviving game without a real sense of achievement. Indicating the survival time at the end of each game session would be a very nice addition.
13  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Fuego! on: 2013-02-27 19:22:15
Well done for all these improvements to your game. I really appreciate the gameplay now.

Unfortunately, I missed the message you posted two weeks ago about them, so I didn't make any new comment sooner.

And I'm sorry to disagree with zeroone, but I think the ship handling is just fine as it is.
14  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: 4King & Country! on: 2013-02-25 21:25:13
A good looking and promising project. You should consider simplifying A LOT your gameplay to save enough bytes to fit it into 4K. Good luck to finish it in only three days.
15  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Space Devastation on: 2013-02-24 21:14:28
forthx, your hardest difficulty setting gives shape to a very cool bullet hell. I wasn't able to go beyond level 8, yet I think it must be very possible.
16  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: 4096 A.D. on: 2013-02-17 21:23:53
The trailer for your game was really great !  Grin

17  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Legend of the package delivering hero on: 2013-02-17 20:29:35
The game is much more challenging and interesting to play now, IMHO.
18  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Space Devastation on: 2013-02-17 20:20:35
I regret the game wasn't more difficult, especially in the first levels. More and faster enemies could make it more thrilling.
19  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Galactic Conquest 4K - II on: 2013-02-17 20:16:34
It tried it again twice, and the freezing bug I formerly noticed on restarting the game didn't occur again.
20  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: tiny_world on: 2013-02-17 09:48:48
Procedural generation rules in 4K ! This Tiny World has a complex gameplay and a great design. Well done !
21  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Dord on: 2013-02-17 09:43:15
Very interesting puzzle platformer game, with a lot of features and challenges.

I would appreciate very much if the level number was indicated on screen, ideally in a particular color if it has already been cleansed. Also, you may add a score based on the number of cleansed level.

But I already guess your answer : no more room to add anything !
22  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Moonshadow on: 2013-02-16 15:14:40
Don't worry, Kronos, your applet worked fine ( at least for me ) at your www.besli.de site. opiop65 just meant that you embedded it uncorrectly in your first message here.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid I can't do much to help you to correct it.

And concerning your game, well, I found it original and quite interesting. My only regret was the lack of challenge. On my first try, I didn't understand anything so I slowly died. Then I read the instructions, and went to level 10 without any problem on my second try. I stopped to play intentionally so I could come back here and write this message.

How to make it more challenging without changing it too much ? Well, I found this vampire disturbingly oppressing yet rather unoffensive. You may slow him, proportionally to the cloud meter or not, and he could also deal much more damages.
23  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Easy shrink method on: 2013-02-15 20:28:23
Thanks for the information, Riven. I had really no idea of this problem.

And Kronos, maybe it's time for you to submit your game at the www.java4k.com site.
24  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Easy shrink method on: 2013-02-15 13:31:27
Kronos, did you try this html code on a webserver to test your game.pack.gz file ? Your html page and your game.pack.gz must be into the same directory.

<html>
<body>
<applet code="G.class" archive="game.pack.gz" width="800" height="600">
<param name="java_arguments" value="-Djnlp.packEnabled=true" />
</applet>
</body>
</html>

If you did and that it failed, you should consider giving us the URL to your webserver...
25  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Easy shrink method on: 2013-02-14 19:56:52
Kronos, did you try to unpack and test locally the resulting jar in a standard applet code ?

1
2
3
Input file : game.pack
Command line>unpack200 game.pack game.pack.test.jar
Output file : game.pack.test.jar
26  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Easy shrink method on: 2013-02-14 13:17:14
I tried it your way, but I get errors after the 3rd step with the jarg.jar.

Kronos, can you report accurately all the errors you get on or after the 3rd step described by SimonH ?

Even better, report also here everything you type on the command line.

Actually, you did it...
27  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Space Devastation on: 2013-02-13 22:53:10
I tested briefly the last version on the java4k.com site. I will try it more extensively by the end of next week-end. However, I can already say that I found weird the energy bar stucked to the ship. I prefered the old version when it took almost the whole screen height. But a horizontal energy bar taking the whole screen width would be ok too.
28  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Easy shrink method on: 2013-02-13 22:42:53
I tried it your way, but I get errors after the 3rd step with the jarg.jar.

But the jshrinker does the job anyway, but I it won't run in the browser, although I added the params to the applet tag. It says no G.class found... Sad

Whats wrong there?

Did you try your packed applet on a distant webserver ?
29  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Legend of the package delivering hero on: 2013-02-10 21:34:46
Your ship controls are very smooth. They may be the best feature of your game.

Concerning the last modifications, I regret there was no improvement of the player's ship graphics. Also, I'm not convinced by the new enemy cannon.

Older features still cause problems. Your star clouds are too dense and then too squared. The game is not difficult enough in my opinion. You should find some ways to make it more thrilling.

One cheap suggestion : increase the vertical scrolling speed on the vertical position of the player's ship - the higher the speeder. The score should increase consequently as the player would arrive sooner at her/his destination.
30  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2013 / Re: Galactic Conquest 4K - II on: 2013-02-09 13:46:06
Finally, I took some time to play this game. I liked very much the first version, and this new one seems to be an improvement in the right direction.

Unfortunately, I encountered a freezing bug on restarting the game. It froze once I clicked on the "Go!" button. It happened three times.
