4  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: BOUNCE - 2D Platformer w/ destructable terrain on: 2012-12-29 14:12:09
Fixed the setup. From now on the game will be compiled with Java 6.
Download available on first post.
5  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: The Platformer! on: 2012-12-29 13:59:31
Looks great! You might want to switch to Java 6 in order to increase compatibility. From what I've heard, you should only use Java 7 if you really need to (like string switches, FileReader stuff, etc.).
6  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: BOUNCE - 2D Platformer w/ destructable terrain on: 2012-12-26 22:50:01
Just found out that part of the code compiled with Java 7 instead of the desired Java 6. Will fix soon.
7  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: BOUNCE - 2D Platformer w/ destructable terrain on: 2012-12-22 22:30:24
Oh btw, Mac users should run the Java 6 version (hopefully OS X will update to Java 7 soon).

Here's a really outdated version  Tongue
https://sites.google.com/site/bouncethegame/downloads/GameTemplate.zip?attredirects=0&d=1
I'm not too concerned about the source code getting out, but I've been told to keep it more or less undisclosed.
9  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: BOUNCE - 2D Platformer w/ destructable terrain on: 2012-12-22 16:35:54
By the way, this is Java 7 not Java 6. You will need to update if you have Java 6.

Why not downgrade. I managed to do it with one of my games (Guardian) within half an hour. It's worth it.
Well this obviously depends on how much of your code depends on stuff that is in Java 7 but not in 6...if you're using switch(string) and java.nio.file for everything it'll take a LOT longer.

I just changed the strings to an enum and changed all the
Files.newInput/OutputStream()
to
new FileInput/OutputStream()
and removed all the underscores from the big numbers in my gameloop. It didn't take too long.

NOW JAVA 6 COMPATIBLE
(Java 7) https://sites.google.com/site/bouncethegame/downloads/BOUNCE_LW.jar?attredirects=0&d=1
(Java 6) https://sites.google.com/site/bouncethegame/downloads/BOUNCE_LW%28J6%29.jar?attredirects=0&d=1

*Updated the main post to include the Java 6 download

Just updated the game to have checkpoints every five levels.
Also you may currently skip levels by pressing '+' and touching a portal.

*There are currently 41 levels. If you try to skip to level 42, the game will crash. That is, if you press '+' until the level number reads 41 and then you touch a portal the game will freeze.
12  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: BOUNCE - 2D Platformer w/ destructable terrain on: 2012-12-22 00:51:54
Can you make it so you don't restart the whole game when you lose, it makes me ragequit.
You should make checkpoint levels that you go back to when you lose.

I second this notion, I tried your game only once and quit shortly after I made a stupid mistake and had to start back from the start all over again.

I think you're right, there aren't enough checkpoints. I'll add more right now.

Version 1.3 is out:
*new set of levels (world 2)
-new powerup (hypershield)
-new boss (Trollface)
-implementing "Conway's Game of Life", added "cells" that obey GoL rules and break blocks they come into contact with
-added a "pow" button (referencing Mario, jumping on it will pause the GoL cells and turn them into physical blocks)
16  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: BOUNCE - 2D Platformer w/ destructable terrain on: 2012-12-03 22:43:21
Version 1.2 is out:
-added hostile "ghosts" (basic, fire, and ice)
-added ice and snow blocks (iceghosts freeze water, ice reverts back to water after being broken or melted)
-working on a whole new set of levels (world 2)

Again, I'm sorry for misunderstanding protocol. I assumed that this

it belongs in WIP
would indicate that I wished for the thread to be relocated.

On another note, when the game is considered "finished" how do I go about putting it in the showcase?
Should I ask for the thread to be moved or should I create a new thread and specify that the this one be destroyed?

You don't really need to post on both posts, instead ask for the topics to be merged instead of double posting the same game on the forum.
Having more than 1 topic about your game is not, I repeat, not allowed. Please read the rules posted on every game board (WIP, showcase, featured).

Sorry, my only intention was to get it merged.

And what is a pixelapp?

-Though an old thread for this already exists in the showcase I thought that as I have been updating it regularly it belongs in WIP.
-Link to BOUNCE in showcase http://www.java-gaming.org/topics/bounce-2d-platformer-w-destructable-terrain/27023/msg/240278/view.html#msg240278

A simple Minecraft-esque 2D platform game.
The storyline (if I had to give it one) centers on you, a circle, lost in an alien world of squares.
In order to escape you must make your way through 30 levels fighting bosses and hardcore parkouring along the way.

Download in Video Description

Download (Newest Version - As of 25 November 2012) : https://sites.google.com/site/bouncethegame/downloads/BOUNCE_LW.jar?attredirects=0&d=1

The JAR only includes 31 game levels but it's fairly easy to design your own using a text editor and include the files in the "levels/" directory of the JAR.

Rate. Comment. Make your own levels. Suggestions?
Thanks for all the positive feedback on the showcase thread! I've implemented a lot of suggested features!

Are you going to add ammo restrictions or is it supposed to be infinite?

Nice, I like the concept. Are you going to add ammo restrictions or is it supposed to be infinite?

Decided to pick this up again:
-Added spreadable fire (it's a pretty nice effect in my opinion, check it out  https://sites.google.com/site/bouncethegame/downloads/BOUNCE_LW.jar?attredirects=0&d=1Pointing)
-Implementing lightning soon
