Got to level 3 before dying. Then I noticed that when you were dead you could still use potions to regain health. And when I tried to fight something or move I got a similar crash to Azulon:

2  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2011 / Re: Community Voting! on: 2011-03-06 15:46:58
Just voted.

30 points weren't enough for me. There were so many games that I wanted to give at least 1 point to that I couldn't give anything 5 points.

And more importantly I had fun playing through all the games. Good job, everyone.  Cheesy
3  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2011 / Re: Help making my sprite transparent on: 2011-02-23 13:17:35
An alpha of 0xff is fully opaque. You want 0x00.

But as me said, if you want fully transparent, why draw the pixel at all?

Thanks for all the good work, Riven.

If we need a private server, I'd be happy to donate.

On reflection (and a few page refreshes) I like the text from a but the duke from c. I didn't realise they were different.

Um... b-- ?
6  Discussions / Suggestions / Re: Stack Overflow style view on: 2011-01-11 19:12:54
It is a ridiculous piece of interface design - the most useful link is the smallest, least obvious thing to click.
In fact, would it be possible to make the thread title link go to the first unread post rather than the first in the thread?
Yeah... I never knew about that. But at least I do now!

Me too. I've always used the unread posts list but never noticed that. Sigh.
7  Discussions / Suggestions / Re: Stack Overflow style view on: 2011-01-09 09:02:24
I would probably find a list of recent posts to be useful. It can be hard to find a topic again once you've read it.

And are 'Show unread posts since last visit' and 'Show unread posts since epoch' supposed to do anything different? They both show the same list for me.

9  Games Center / Archived Projects / Re: HyperBlazer for Android on: 2010-08-09 18:50:49
Just tried this on my HTC Desire.

It seemed fast and smooth - there were one or two momentary slowdowns but they didn't affect the gameplay.

I did find it difficult to steer at first with the on-screen buttons. It got easier after a while, but having two different kinds of input, both tilting and pressing buttons, doesn't seem very intuitive to me. I would have preferred to be able to steer by tilting the phone. Especially as I usually just accelerate by tilting the phone as far forward as possible.

Overall, nice job  Cool

You should not get a blank page.

Log-in should work, I tested it right now both in FF and IE.

Aha. Firefox remembers my login  Cheesy (I've since switched to Opera.)

I'd like to vote, but I'm having problems logging in to java4k.com.

I've probably forgotten my username & password, but I just get a blank page when I try. Sad

I've had problems with the Pack200 applets, but it's specific to Opera. They all work fine in IE and Firefox.

14  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2010 / Re: Music/Sound on: 2009-12-26 13:08:53
It stuttered badly on my machine until I reduced the sample rate to a quarter to the value.

But it's impressive. I'm not sure whether I'm doing a 4k this year, but I wanted to have sound. So this is nice.
15  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2010 / Re: Quadriletteral on: 2009-12-14 18:31:48
I think I managed to solve it (with no less than 8 hints), but I had to google for some really obscure words.

I played about 5 times and only saw what I thought were everyday words.

It all changes colour if you've found the intended solution, so there shouldn't be any doubt.

16  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2010 / Re: Quadriletteral on: 2009-12-14 13:18:17
Step 4. Count letter frequencies. Count bytecodes 0-25 in the .pack file produced with an empty string in place of the data. Assign letters accordingly (i.e. 's' -> 21, which is the most common byte - not surprising, because it's the opload for iload; 'e' -> 0; etc).

Step 5. Emit the alphabet* ordered so that I can do a charAt to invert the mapping set up in 4. Emit the string from 3 encoded as specified in 4.

Cunning! Shocked
17  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2010 / Re: Quadriletteral on: 2009-12-14 11:14:54
Ouch, it's hard for me 'cause my mother language is not English...

I found it hard even though I'm English and I like word games. I played a few times and I think 4 hints was the best I did.

pjt33, care to share how you're compressing the dictionary? I only managed to get 1000 or so words in my entry last year. Although I did go up to 6 letters.
18  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2010 / Re: Fishing-4k on: 2009-12-12 10:52:59
I can't get over 100. Angry It gets hard rather quickly for me. As soon as the fish move as fast as the boat it's all over.

It's okay in Firefox and IE but it doesn't work in Opera; I just see the text "Applet not found." I think that's a pack200 thing. Perhaps Opera is looking for a different file that isn't present.
19  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: Java f$£%ing up the "Add or Remove Programs" list in Windows on: 2009-07-03 18:43:24
Yes, I've had this problem. I can't remember which ones because I've 'fixed' it by removing them with CCleaner.

Years ago I used to wish that Java apps would install like normal apps so you didn't have to find Web Start in order to run them again. I've since changed my mind.

This is one reason why I'll probably not use Web Start again for 4k competitions and the like.
20  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2009 / Re: Judging due tomorrow on: 2009-03-22 10:52:40
Judging this many games is a lot of work. If the judges need more time then they should have it, in my opinion.

I'm sure everyone appreciates their effort.
21  Discussions / General Discussions / Re: What happened to java.com? on: 2009-03-17 19:02:29
I don't speak anything but English myself, but a few years ago I worked for a localization company. There was one project which involved multiple languages that were split between us and a rival company. We weren't doing Dutch, but discovered that they had screwed up the Dutch translation - I think they had translated it into Belgian Dutch instead of Netherlands Dutch. And there were enough differences to make the result laughable in places. Just a thought.
22  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2009 / Re: Robo Rampage 4k on: 2009-03-15 19:23:31
Well, you have to collect the blue 'pods'. There are ten per level and a counter in the corner of the screen.

As for the aiming, the reason you have to aim for the robot's feet is that the laser is supposed to be coming straight down from space.

The spawn points can't be destroyed or it would probably be too easy. I did think about putting in walls, but because the laser is aimed independent of your position you would effectively be able to shoot 'through' them. You could just hide and pick them all off.

But glad you liked it.  Simple low res art is about all I can manage. Cheesy
23  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2009 / Re: Word Twister 4k on: 2009-03-09 19:22:45
There are about 1000 words in total, packed into a big string:

1
"ace3s2id4ly2re2t..."

To compress things a little, words are separated by numbers which show how many letters they inherit from the previous word. Thus
ace
(ace)s
(ac)id
(acid)ly
...

It zips up nicely. I tried various other ideas for further compression but none were worth the lines needed for decoding.

You might also notice that no words have duplicate letters. This simplified the algorithm for listing the shorter words.

Minimax is your basic algorithm. It's a depth-first search with a function for evaluating game positions.

Alpha-beta is a way of pruning irrelevant branches of the tree to make the search faster.

Now what's funny about that is the multiple of 10 line numbering.  Cheesy Reminds me of learning Basic on my good old speccy.
27  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2009 / Re: Putty Shuffle on: 2009-02-03 20:02:54
Had another play on it this evening.  Wink The presentation really helps, it doesn't feel like a normal 4k game.

The level design is pretty good too. I keep on finding new ways to do solve them -

Level 5 in 6 moves. Roll Eyes
Level 11 in 15 moves.
Level 13 in 20 moves.
Level 15 in 22 moves.

Edit: one small bug I suppose. If you try to drag a block in a direction that it can't go, it still counts as a move.
28  Games Center / 4K Game Competition - 2009 / Re: Putty Shuffle on: 2009-02-02 23:06:30
Phew. Level 10 was tricky. It was hard to just solve it, let alone in so few moves.

But I beat a few other records:
Level 11 in 16
Level 13 in 22
Level 16 in 12.

Really very good. Brain tired now.
