Wow, Xyclin is looking great!

To answer Jimmt (and since lastdigitofpi invited me to) Dysis started out as an FPS, and still has some FPS features in it, but now focuses a lot on RTS as well. The game is going well, and we are just about to start the next phase of our testing (our second batch of Kickstarter backers and soon the public).
Here are a couple recent screenies from Dysis:

I'll just leave the links, as I don't want to derail your thread Smiley

Looking really good - I'd love to see an explosion animation to go with that grenade!

Unfortunately, I cannot give you those numbers as I don't have them. I am given the number of votes per day against the average number of votes in the top hundred in bar graph form - so I just know my ratio (vaguely) against that average. I also know the total number of unique visitors as well as the number of favorites (20k, and 800 respectively), but again, couldn't tell you how many of those visitors have voted yes on Dysis. As far as getting greenlit, again I am at a loss. I am quite sure that you need to be in the top 100, (and I originally thought the top 10), but it seems like it is up to Valve to choose once you are in the top 100, as some games were closer to the 50 mark and got greenlit this past month.
3  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: New FPS/RPG, A Work in Progress: Dysis on: 2012-11-30 19:22:02
Woo! Dysis just made it to the top 100 on Steam Greenlight!

I've also been working on some flying units:

The ones in the picture above are pretty small, so here's a closer look at your basic flying attack units:

Some people have been asking about transporting units to floating islands. My answer to this:

Hope you guys like the new stuff, and thank you for the support!

The Prototype is set to launch in December, and I've got a lot more content coming - but I wanted to lay down the framework for a lot of different stuff before I really flush it out.

Jimmt - thanks a bunch!

Riven - ya, I've researched it a bit, there are definitely tax breaks for indie game companies under research and development, deferred taxes (accrual accounting - since my products aren't actually in peoples hands yet), and lastly (that I know of... but I will be looking into this a lot now that the KS is over) there is domestic production activity deduction. All in all, the tax cut is bigger than the 9-10% that Amazon and Kickstarter take out, plus I have to pay for T-Shirts and stuff, but it's still a big help! As things go forward I'll be sure to mark my progress so that anyone else seeking to do Kickstarter campaigns will know what I run in to, what maybe to avoid, or what I would suggest doing differently (a lot of this is brand new territory for me, but I'm really enjoying the experience!)

ra4king - oh dear... I had totally forgotten about finals. That's certainly an interesting development. Not to worry - I'll help you fail your academic career with style: video games! Haha, but seriously - I'll look at releasing during a time that hopefully doesn't disturb too many folks studying - shall I aim for early March so you have the last week to study? =p Perhaps waiting until after your finals (as a reward to yourself) would be best?
5  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: New FPS/RPG, A Work in Progress: Dysis on: 2012-11-07 23:04:59
ra4king - awesome! There were definitely a bunch of people who had transactions fails, but it seems like Kickstarter/Amazon sends out mail every 24 hours for 14 days (10 days left) or until it is fixed, so that's pretty cool (or maybe super annoying? Haha), but thanks for fixing your pledge Cheesy

Riven - very much true, but hey - it's a huge help regardless of the money cuts - I'm psyched to see people so excited, and I'm pumped to get Dysis out there!

masteryoom - Woo! I'm glad you are excited! My plan is to have the prototype out in December, the Beta in March, and get the final game out sometime after that!

I have a big announcement for Dysis (though everyone who pledged on Kickstarter should have already gotten the update email!): I've begun the Dysis Greenlight Campaign!

I've got an updated trailer (just visuals updated - I wanted greenlight folks to experience the same trailer I developed for Kickstarter... and I wanted to not spend a ton of time whipping up an alternate trailer right now when I can be working on in-game stuff):

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/_agpOAmtzyo?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;start=" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/_agpOAmtzyo?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;start=</a>

Anyway, if you'd like to help get Dysis on Steam (even if you don't use Steam - as I will be updating all versions of Dysis, regardless of whether or not they are on Steam)! I would be very grateful if you helped me out and voted Dysis up! http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=107019583

Thanks for your time, and continuing support here everyone :-)

Thanks so much! Thanks everyone - I can't wait to get the game out there for you to play Cheesy

I'm really excited that I get to work with a bunch of people to make some in-game characters, we're going to have a blast!
7  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: New FPS/RPG, A Work in Progress: Dysis on: 2012-10-30 16:17:52
You guys are too kind. It's true I haven't made a game before - but I have the robotics programming experience (which has helped a bunch!) - so hopefully that doesn't make you too grumpy Cas Smiley It's funny, when I was learning the ropes with openGL (ha, when... all the time still it seems) I actually kept running into posts you made, Cas. The internet is a great thing, definitely a good time to learn openGL and game making. And the big step up in processing power from robots to laptops/desktops has been really nice. I've also done a bunch of 3D modelling before (years and years at this point, plus all the CAD for the robots) - so that's definitely part of the reason I can do that. In a lot of ways, game logic is very similar to robot logic - all a big state machine, but instead of world interaction, everything is essentially simulated.

@Joshua Waring - if some of the KS milestones aren't hit I will probably just not focus on them until later. I still want to get everything into the game, but I'll put my effort into the gameplay and other elements initially. I want to give everything the attention it deserves, and that takes time. So the idea is that more KS money basically buys me more full-time working on everything so that I can really get everything into good shape within my time frame Smiley

As for the hexes, haha, we'll see. Like I said, still in the engine (easy to turn right back on), and I have this big translation function for all the physics and rendering in the game to use them... but it just isn't as easy as... well, not translating everything. I will say maybe on them - and potentially as a graphics switch, but more likely as separate alien worlds/areas.

Thanks again for the support everyone, you guys are awesome!
8  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: New FPS/RPG, A Work in Progress: Dysis on: 2012-10-30 01:56:44
I'm back on cubes for now (though the engine can run the hexes just fine), however I am working on a terrain smoothing algorithm that makes it look a bit more like the hexes. The cubes are much easier to optimize though, and since I don't want peoples computers to struggle, that's what I am focusing on right now. Don't worry, they are still there, and I might bring them back for some alien looking terrain!

Thanks for the support!
9  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: New FPS/RPG, A Work in Progress: Dysis on: 2012-10-29 23:20:41
Yea! That's the idea - I'll be introducing the Architect character in the next gameplay vid and he will be a lot more fun to pilot. Take more hits, can also build structures/modify the terrain. Should be a lot of fun pounding on the robot fodder Smiley
10  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: New FPS/RPG, A Work in Progress: Dysis on: 2012-10-29 23:01:41
Thanks! Wow... I didn't even know it existed - definitely going to check it out though! Can you pilot/control all the units/in first person? Cool!

Hahaha, well this escalated quickly =p

But yep, I'm just outside of Atlanta - lovely place. I figured I would add in that tier because the Atl airport is the busiest in the world (so there is actually a pretty high probability of people flying through). Also someone requested I throw something like that up there, could be a ton of fun!

Thank you! Gjallar - ya, I've had a long while to tweak and refine everything, and I do have someone doing the music for me Smiley

Matheus23 - thanks a bunch! Hey me too on those blocks.

ra4king - awesome! I'm glad you're excited, thanks for pledging - I can't wait to give you a copy!

Eeesh, delaying T-Shirt designs till next update, but that's now main priority since I've got the first update live!

I've got some brand new terrain and biomes to show off:

Plus Steven Stern posted a very gracious article (I'm blushing a here) on Valid Gaming: http://validgaming.com/kickstarter-project-dysis/

All the new details can be found back on the Kickstarter page Cheesy

You're over 100% funded!  Cheesy

Woo! Running a little behind with the update today, I just want to make sure those shirts turn out perfect Cheesy

Also, Nathan over at Indie Game HQ was kind enough to interview me and put Dysis up on their page! http://indiegamehq.com/dysis-developer-talks-biomes-maps-and-kickstarter-with-indie-game-hq/

I'm not exactly sure why Kickstarter has such strict requirements - I guess they just want to ensure that all pledges go through?

Either way, the KS is going great! I'm going to be making a big update tomorrow morning (~9:00 EST, 14:00 GMT) - so stay tuned and keep spreading the word! Cheesy

The Mason builder robots thank you:

The Kickstarter is going very well, plus I have a big update that I am working on and plan on releasing in a couple days!

20  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: New FPS/RPG, A Work in Progress: Dysis on: 2012-10-07 00:02:38
Hey Sammidysam, so "free updates forever" is meant to be until release (all content until then is directly leading to the full version) - so down the road I might release a new version or large expansion pack that I want charge for (something that isn't part of the initial game and takes months of work), but updates, bug fixes (and to be completely honest, probably even all the content) will be totally free (up to and after the release). I just don't want to be five years down the road making something like 'Dysis 2' and someone asking for it for free because they bought the first one and "get all updates forever for free". Apologies for that being confusing, I definitely don't mean it to be, and don't want to come off as a jerk! - I will certainly release free updates through and after the release, and any bug fixes will always be free (duh, haha Smiley. Also, I have NO INTEREST in releasing small DLC paid packages - so any post-release DLC that is small will be free if you own the game (so new units, or terrain formations, all that stuff).

Thanks for your interest, hopefully that cleared up any confusion? Cheesy

Best,
-Chris

Whoops! The link to the development blog is here: http://tumblr.dysis.net/ Hopefully you can reach it from the main Dysis.net webpage (under dev blog up at the top?), and I've been keeping track of the game since the first day I began working on it (though not every day since, but a lot of the big steps in between!).
23  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: New FPS/RPG, A Work in Progress: Dysis on: 2012-10-05 19:32:32
Thanks everyone!

Sproingie - awesome! I was wondering who backed it for 60$, thanks so much! The T-shirt designs should be done in the next couple days or so, you won't be disappointed! (and if you are, send me a message , and I'll do my best to make them even better!). And as far as the trailer - nope, all just in-game stuff that I shot fairly continuously, plus most of the latest stuff was wrapped into my talking commentary (which I've done more recently), so the game mostly looks and works better than in the trailer (that, and I've been tweaking some stuff due to suggestions I got after posting today - mostly to fix the laser weapons). I've got tons to add, and I'll be updating the kickstarter and tumblr blog as I go!

Sammyster - thank you! Oh (and Sproingie too) the hexes definitely don't optimize as well, but hopefully I can find a good way to fit them in (as you said, they definitely look very alien!) - they are definitely still in the game engine for now - and I'll do my best to get them in there in one form or another!

Matheus23 - yep, this is definitely one of the reasons I am focusing on the cubes right now - they optimize easier - and if I am pushing heavier graphics in other places (weapons, robot models, atmospherics) then I need the optimizations somewhere else Smiley
24  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: New FPS/RPG, A Work in Progress: Dysis on: 2012-10-05 16:56:23
I still have the ability to switch between the hexes and cubes with the switch of a bit (someone asked me a few days ago and I tested it - everything works in both situations). I still do really like the look of the hexes, but I do worry about optimizations when it comes to rendering and smoothing. I'll keep the code in there for as long as it works though, in case someone wants to mod them in (or there turns out to be a really good use for them!), we'll see!

Smiley
25  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: New FPS/RPG, A Work in Progress: Dysis on: 2012-10-05 16:36:08
That's my plan (at least for naturally generated stuff), to use a smoothing algorithm like marching cubes or similar. This is also the reason I have come back to cubes - as making a transition to smooth terrain from hexes isn't so natural. Then, when the user modifies the terrain, it will become more blocky and harsh (and thus also easier to place buildings, mine, etc.)

I'm glad you like it so far - stay tuned for updates Cheesy

Thanks,
-Chris

Hey all, I'm launching a Kickstarter!
Details can be found here on the new site: http://dysis.net/
Or here on the Kickstarter Page: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/330858688/dysis

And here is the youtube launch trailer (though it doesn't have all the commentary that the kickstarter has!):

Thanks for the support, and check out the rewards!

All the best,

28  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: New FPS/RPG, A Work in Progress: Dysis on: 2012-08-02 18:55:50
Thanks Cheesy

Matheus23, I'm working on that, I hope to launch a kickstarter very soon! Haha, ya, it definitely is fast, but not sped up. Pretty neat to see it in action - openCL is beastly. I did my first generation tests just working with nanosecond timers (and did a few chunks CPU, then a few GPU, ramping up until I did a few hundred at once on each), and the timestamp difference was just enormous. CPU could do a single chunk fairly fast on its own, but GPU seems to be more of a bottleneck at bandwidth than actually terrain generation (which is why 65k blocks in a chunk happens in ~1ms regardless of octaves which in the CPU just kills generation time). I'm working on having openCL push block data right to GL so that bandwidth bottleneck won't be an issue (though I'm pretty new to openCL) - hopefully that'll mean even faster generation time though, because at the moment it's generating the chunks visually that take the most time (and that's just silly). OpenCL should be able to just keep the memory on the GPU and openGL can generate the VBO on its side with no hesitation (I'd just have pass the VBO pointer) - at least that's how I understand it.

Mads - yes indeed, I am going to have a big trailer to show off the full terrain/textures/everything with all the terrain features (floating islands, mountains with overhangs etc.) included with that. Thanks for your input - and I'm glad you you like the popping, flying around like that is a little scary as it tends to look like the ground is coming up mighty fast!

Cheers
29  Games Center / WIP games, tools & toy projects / Re: New FPS/RPG, A Work in Progress: Dysis on: 2012-08-02 18:40:39
Thanks everyone Smiley

I've revamped terrain generation to run with openCL and thus real-time infinite terrain is a much more realistic possibility (not that you can't do in with threads on the CPU, but this is tons faster than that!)
