1  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / Re: odd question ...floating/jumping..sorta on: 2008-08-27 03:47:36
Thanks for the help Hansdampf ! For some reason I can only get one pm at a time.

Now that the movement is pretty much done with I have to start with the background and collision. Know of any tutorials or something like that that might help?

Thanks,
Troy
2  Game Development / Newbie & Debugging Questions / odd question ...floating/jumping..sorta on: 2008-08-24 09:24:14
Hey, I know this is an odd question, but I have asked on other forums and haven't gotten much of a response. The game I am working on is actually in XNA, but seeing that the game I am wondering about is written in Java I was hoping someone might be able to help out a bit. I am trying to make a game that has a similar flying mechanic to ( http://www.terabytelabs.net/shyguys-cave-of-death/#comments). My problem is that when I release the spacebar the ship will continue to climb up for a bit before starting to descend....and overall it doesn't seem to be nearly as snappy as the shyguy game.

If it would be any help here is my current code...again in C#

if (currentState.IsKeyDown(Keys.Space) == true)
            {

                sPos.Y += .4f;
                velocity = 2;

            }

            if (currentState.IsKeyDown(Keys.Space) == false)
            {
                sPos.Y -= .8f;
                velocity = -1;
            }

        }

        public void Update(GameTime theGameTime)
        {
            KeyboardState aCurrentKeyboardState = Keyboard.GetState();

            spritePosition.X = spritePosition.X + 5;
            velocity -= acceleration * (float)theGameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalSeconds;

            sPos.Y -= velocity * (float)theGameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalSeconds;

            spritePosition.Y -= sPos.Y;

            Movement(aCurrentKeyboardState);

        }

Obviously I don't expect to get a response written in C#...just a general idea about what I might be doing wrong.

Thanks for the help,
Troy
3  Java Game APIs & Engines / Java 2D / Help jumping in platformer. on: 2007-06-29 08:47:36
Howdy, I decided to start to work on a sidescroller. I am having a bit of trouble getting my character to have a decent jump. What I have now is really robotic I was hoping to get it to feel more natural. I have probably searched through these and other forums for a good two hours and havn't been able to find anything that helps. Could you guys give me a link to a tutorial or if easy enough post up some quick code. Thanks for the help.
4  Java Game APIs & Engines / Java 2D / dumb question.. on: 2007-06-25 08:43:39
I was looking through the Drawing 2d graphics thread and was wondering can you use images made in inkscape/ corel draw or other vector programs in java games. I did a couple searches for .svg and only came up with simple geometry stuff like asteroids. I am looking for an art style you can find in most flash games. So is it possible to use these files? Thanks for the help! Sorry for the dumb question.

onyx do you use a tablet? I have been messing around with different vector programs and am not really satisfied with anything I have come up with. Wondering if a tablet would help me out.

thanks
